Eagles Play the Griz to a 0-0 Draw in Double Overtime

EWU is back in action Sunday (Sept. 30) at Northern Colorado

MISSOULA, Mont.—The Eastern Washington University soccer team hit the road for the first time in Big Sky Conference play today (Sept. 28) as they battled to a 0-0 draw in double-overtime against the Montana Grizzlies. With the result, Eastern is now 5-4-3 overall with a 1-1-1 mark in conference play.

"I thought we played the best we have played all year in the first half today. We had some really good performances from people in a very tough environment to play in," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "Our back line was steady today and collected another clean sheet. We were very unlucky not to score late in the second overtime. I'm proud of our group as we continue to get better as the season continues."
 
Wasting no time, Brittany Delridge took EWU's first shot of the game in the third minute, but it was blocked by the Montana defense. The Grizzlies took their first opportunity with a shot from Kennedy Yost just minutes later, but Kelsee Winston was there for her first save of the day.

Delridge had another chance in the ninth minute of play but the ball just missed the mark and hit the crossbar.  Both teams took numerous shot attempts in the first half but neither team was able to connect for a goal. After 45 minutes of play the Griz and Eagles returned to their respective locker rooms as the score remained 0-0. The Eagles outshot Montana 11-4 in the first half with one shot on goal.
 
Returning from halftime, the Griz took the first shot of the half but Winston was there again to help keep the clean sheet. Brooke Dunbar saw an opportunity for an EWU goal in the 56th minute of play but Montana's goalie Claire Howard made the stop. Eastern had another chance in the 72nd minute behind the foot of Allison Raniere but it landed in Howard's hands.
 
Montana tried to close things out with a shot from Taylor Hansen but Winston was there for the save and the score remained 0-0 with just under two minutes left of the second half. Neither team was able to score in the entire second half after multiple attempts. UM outshot EWU 8-4 in the second half with two corner kicks. Both Eastern and UM's goalies had two saves in the second half. After a full 90 minutes of play the scored remained 0-0 and the Griz and the Eagles headed into the first 10 minutes of overtime.
 
The Griz took the first shot of the first overtime period from McKenzie Warren but the ball sailed right and the score remained 0-0. Montana took two shots in the first overtime period and one corner kick and the Eagles did not attempt a shot in the first overtime period. Both teams were unable to net a goal which left the score at a draw of 0-0 leading into the second overtime period.
 
Entering the second overtime period Raniere took a corner kick for the Eagles but was unable to connect for a goal. Following the second overtime period the score remained at a draw of 0-0 and the game ended. Winston recorded two key saves during the second 10 minute overtime play.
 
After 110 minutes of play, UM and EWU both took 16 shots on the match, EWU took four shots on goal and Montana took five. The Eagles saw three corner kicks throughout the match while the Griz saw six. Raniere led Eastern with five shots, three of which were on goal.
 
Win-Loss Records
The Eagles now have an overall record of 5-4-3 and 1-1-1 in Big Sky play. The Griz now sit at a 1-6-3 overall record and 0-1-1 in conference play after today's match. Today's game was the Eagles third Big Sky match of the 2018 schedule and their first road trip of conference play.
 
Keys to the Game
Goalkeeper Kelsee Winston recorded 110 minutes in the net for the Eagles in today's match as well as five saves on the day. Allison Raniere took a five shots on the match, three of which were shots on goal. 
 
Notables
Kelsee Winston had fives saves in today's match. Allison Raniere, Brooke Dunbar, Brittany Delridge, Devan Talley, Jenny Chavez and Taylor Matheny all took shots for the Eagles.

This was Eastern's fifth overtime match this season. The Eagles are 1-1-3 in overtime matches this year.
 
What's Next
EWU will be back in action this Sunday, Sept. 30, for their second road trip match against Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. at 11 a.m. Pacific time.
