Eastern Washington to Face Montana, Montana State on the Road this Week

The Eagles play the Grizzlies on Oct. 3 before taking on the Bobcats on Oct. 5

MATCH NOTES

CHENEY, Wash. –
Big Sky Conference play continues for the Eastern Washington University volleyball team this week on the road. The Eagles travel to Missoula, Mont., on Oct. 3 for a 6 p.m. Pacific time matchup against the Montana Grizzlies. On Oct. 5, Eastern Washington takes on Montana State in Bozeman, Mont., at 6 p.m. PT.

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: Eastern Washington is 2-12 overall with an 0-2 mark in Big Sky play, sitting at 10th place in the conference standings. The Eagles played at home for the first time all season last weekend, falling to both Sacramento State 3-1 on Sept. 26 and to Portland State 3-0 on Sept. 27.
 
The Eagles are hitting .114 with 10.17 kills, 14.75 digs, 1.5 blocks and 9.37 assists per set. As a team, they rank fifth in the Big Sky with 1.4 service aces per set, with 73 total on the year.
 
Puaoolelagi Sao averages 4.42 digs per set which is fourth in the conference and 88th nationally. Her 230 total digs are also fourth in the Big Sky and 92nd in all of Division I.
 
Offensively, Eastern Washington is led by freshman Nicoletta Capizzi who has 100 kills on the year. She averages 1.92 per set and is hitting .215. She's also second on the team in blocks with 29 total, good for .56 per set.
 
Ashlyn Blotzer leads the team with .73 blocks per set, as she's totaled 38 on the year. She also averages 1.69 kills per set with 15 service aces.
 
Ana Paula Zandona and ShaRae Niu have split setting duties for the Eagles this season. Zandona leads the way and ranks 10th in the conference with 6.92 assists per set while also leading the Eagles with .31 service aces per set. Niu adds 3.95 assists per set.
 
A LOOK AT THE GRIZZLIES: Montana is 1-12 overall and is also 0-2 to start Big Sky play. The Grizzlies lost to both Montana State (Sept. 24) and Northern Colorado (Sept. 26) in straight sets and are currently 11th in the conference standings.
 
The Grizzlies are hitting .128 on the year with 9.7 kills, 8.8 assists, 1.0 service aces, 11.6 digs and 1.8 blocks per set.
 
Janna Grimsrud leads the team with 2.24 kills per set and is hitting .268 this season. She also adds 1.02 blocks per set which is 10th in the Big Sky. Casey Stites leads the team with 4.31 assists and .21 service aces per set while Missy Huddleston leads the way with 2.40 digs per set.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Eastern Washington is just 36-42 all-time against the Grizzlies and have dropped the last three matchups. In Missoula, the Eagles are 13-25 all-time. Thirty-three of the 78 all-time meetings between the two foes have been decided in three sets, with Eastern winning 18 of those.
 
Last season, the Eagles fell 3-1 in Missoula on Oct. 11 and lost in straight-sets at home on Nov. 9. MaKenna Davis had 13 kills in the loss on the road and 10 kills in the loss at home. Catelyn Linke had 11 digs in the loss on the road and contributed with nine kills and seven digs in the loss at home.
 
A LOOK AT THE BOBCATS: Montana State is 5-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference play to rank fifth in the standings. The Bobcats opened the season with a sweep over Montana before falling to Northern Colorado in straight sets. MSU will host Idaho on Oct. 3 before playing the Eagles.
 
The Bobcats rank 84th in the nation with 2.26 blocks per set, led by Kelsie White who averages 1.10 per set.
 
MSU boasts the conference leader in digs in Allyssa Rizzo who averages 5.74 per set to rank fifth nationally. Her 241 total digs are 66th. Allie Lynch ranks fourth in the Big Sky with 9.83 assists per set which is good for 85th in the nation.
 
SERIES HISTORY: The Eagles lead the all-time series over the Bobcats, 53-23, and have won six out of the last ten matchups. Eastern won five-straight meetings against MSU from 2015 to 2017, but have since lost three-straight. In Bozeman, the Eagles are 20-16 and they are looking for their first road win since Sept. 24, 2016.
 
Last season, the Eagles came back from being down two sets and took the Bobcats to five sets, but lost on the road (21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21,13-15). Both Linke (17k-17d) and Davis (17k-14d) had double doubles in the loss while Kamille Langford had 13 kills and nine total blocks. Puaoolelagi Sao had 16 digs.
 
The Eagles then lost to the Bobcats in straight sets at home on Nov. 8. Linke had 20 digs while Davis had 10 kills to go with eight digs. Langford at 11 kills.
 
UP NEXT: Eastern Washington has a quick turnaround, as they host Idaho on Oct. 8 at home at 6:05 p.m. Following the match, the Eagles travel to Greeley, Colo., to take on Northern Colorado on Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. Pacific time.
