Eastern Washington Soccer Shuts Out Idaho State on the Road, 3-0

Brooke Dunbar and Kendall Pope help secure the victory

POCATELLO, Idaho. – The Eastern Washington University soccer team competed against Idaho State today (Oct. 11) to a 3-0 victory on the road. Brooke Dunbar scored twice in the match as EWU remains undefeated in Big Sky Conference play.

"Overall what a good performance on the road in a tough place to play. Our first forty minutes were a bit of a rocky start for us, but I thought Brooke Dunbar and Kendall Pope really gave us a spark with their effort and goals," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "Our backline kept a clean sheet and Colby Wilson and Marissa Mills did extremely well today. McKaley Goffard and Taylor Matheny did a great job getting up and down the line and getting crosses in for us as well. We did a great job in the middle of the park keeping the ball when we had it and being tough to break down when we didn't. Overall, just a positive performance on the road by our group, we keep improving at the right time."

The Eagles saw action right off the gate as goalkeeper Kelsee Winston made her first save in the first minute from a shot by Idaho State's senior Jazmin Lopez. Following the save, Eastern traded shots back and forth with Idaho State before finding a goal late in the first half.

The goal came in the 43rd minute after a shot by redshirt sophomore Kendall Pope that was saved by ISU's goalkeeper Katie Hogarth. Hogarth failed to clear the ball as it landed at the feet of McKaley Goffard who delivered it back to Pope to find the back of the net. Pope scored her first goal of the season and of her Eagle career.

EWU junior Taylor Matheny had a chance to score in the 45th minute but her shot was blocked, and the score remained 1-0 after the first half.

Returning from halftime, Eastern wasted no time in finding themselves a second goal. After a shot from Dunbar that was saved by Hogarth, the ball found Dunbar again as she slotted it into the net in the 47th minute. The score turned 2-0 in EWU's favor, however, Dunbar was not done scoring.

In the 60th minute, Dunbar scored her second goal of the match from an assist by Pope. The scored turned 3-0 and marked Dunbar's third goal of the season.

Idaho State tried to build some momentum with a shot in the 78th minute but Winston was there with the save. After ninety minutes of play, the match ended 3-0 in EWU's favor.

Winston recorded her tenth shutout of her career, which movers her to second all-time for career shutouts in EWU history.
