NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Eastern Washington University soccer team fell to CSUN 1-0 in today's match (Sept. 8). EWU faced a penalty kick in the third minute of the match that ended up being the deciding factor.
"We played well for 70 minutes today. Unfortunately, we didn't start until we were twenty minutes into the game and down 1-0," said head coach
Chad Bodnar. "We moved the ball well and were dangerous on set pieces and looked like we had scored several times in the second half. Unfortunately, things didn't go the way we thought they looked. Our effort was good and we have to put all the pieces together as we get closer to conference play. This weekend was a good trip for us with different challenges against both opponents. We look forward to getting back to work this week."
CSUN found themselves ahead after a foul from the Eagles in the third minute that resulted in a penalty kick. The penalty was taken by Bethany Fitzsimmons to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead.
Eagle goalkeeper
Kelsee Winston continued to be tested following the penalty kick as she saved a shot in the ninth minute to prevent a second goal. CSUN outshot Eastern 4-2 in the first half with the score remaining 1-0 in the Matadors's favor after the halftime whistle blew.
Eastern put up three shots coming out of the half to try and even the score, but one shot was saved by CSUN goalkeeper Amanda Delgado and the other two were off target. In the 66th minute, the Eagles had another opportunity to score when senior
Brooke Dunbar shot the ball at the net but Delgado was in front for another save.
The Eagles would find themselves one last opportunity to score in the 77th minute when
Brooke Flores found an open lane to shoot but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
EWU would not be able to find an answer before the final whistle blew and the game finished in a 1-0 defeat for the Eagles.
