CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team hosted Northern Colorado today (Jan. 23) at Reese Court where they fell by a final score of 74-55.
Maisie Burnham led the team with a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double.
"A frustrating effort today. I thought we came out flat on both ends of the floor and didn't play with the intensity level that we need to play with. It was a disappointing effort," said head coach
Wendy Schuller.
Northern Colorado used an 8-0 run to help them lead 16-9 after the first quarter.
The Bears controlled most of the second quarter as well, using an 18-3 run to lead 36-18 at the half.
Burnham scored 12 of her 22 points in the third quarter. After the Bears pulled ahead 50-24, a
Jenna Dick three-pointer sparked a 6-0 run for the Eagles. Eastern Washington would out-score Northern Colorado 22-20 in the fourth and ended the frame on a 6-0 run to trail 56-40 at the end of the third.
UNC went on a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter, but the Eagles refused to back down. They went on an 11-1 run over 3:45 and forced five turnovers during that span and held the Bears without a field goal for nearly four minutes in the fourth quarter. Despite the late surge, Eastern Washington fell 74-55.
WIN-LOSS RECORDS: Eastern Washington falls to 5-8 overall and an even 4-4 in Big Sky Conference play, while Northern Colorado improves to 6-9 and 5-5 in conference action.
TOP PERFORMANCES: Maisie Burnham scored in double figures for the eighth-straight game, leading the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds. It was the second 20-plus performance of the freshman's career and her first career double-double.
Aaliyah Alexander followed with nine points and four rebounds. She also led the team with three assists and had two steals.
Grace Kirscher fouled out with 6:18 left in the fourth quarter, but contributed with eight points and led the team with three steals, three assists and a block to lead the Eagles.
Kallie Schaplow came off of the bench and was a perfect 2-of-2 from three-point range to add six points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Eastern Washington was 18-of-55 from the field (32.7%), 3-of-18 from three-point range (16.7%) and 16-of-20 (80%) from the free throw line. Ten of Eastern's 18 field goals were assisted.
The Bears shot 50 percent overall, making 28 of their 56 attempts from the field. They were also an even 50 percent from three-point range, making 11-of-22. At the free throw line, they were 7-of-10 (70%).
Eastern Washington forced 17 turnovers and turn them in to 15 points. They were edged in the rebounding category, 35 to 30, and outscored in the paint (26-20).
