CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team hosted Montana today (Oct. 17) and fell to 2-0 deficit at the EWU Soccer Field in Cheney, Wash. An early goal in the 15
th minute edged the Griz in front before a late 65
th minute goal wrapped up the win in the final stages of the match.
EWU felt the pressure early on as goalkeeper
Kelsee Winston made her first save of the match after a long shot to the bottom right which was easily scooped up in the fourth minute. Nine minutes later following the shot, Montana would nudge in front after Skyleigh Thompson received the ball in the middle from Sydney Haustein and poked it into the back of the net.
With the Griz on top 1-0, attacks continued to lunge towards the Eagle defense as Winston would face six more shots before the first half intermission, saving two shots with the rest missing its target.
As the second half began, the Eagles faced five more shots before the Griz snuck a second goal into the back of the net in the 65
th minute, again from Thompson as the score would turn 2-0.
With the relentlessness of the Eagle offense, they managed to create several opportunities, including a daring shot from 25 yards out by
Taylor Matheny which flew just inches over the crossbar, as well as a set piece opportunity in which
Mya Elder-Hammond beamed one on frame, forcing UM goalkeeper Camellia Xu to make a save.
As the minutes ticked down towards the 90-minute mark,
Brittany Delridge would find some space to let off a rocket shot which bruised the crossbar in the 84
th minute, nearly putting the Eagles on the scoreboard.
With two minutes left, Winston would make two more consecutive saves to deny the Griz any opportunities as the score remained 2-0 in Montana's favor.
