Eagle Soccer Falls in Double Overtime to Idaho, 2-1

A golden goal by the visitors upsets the Eagles in the 108th minute

CHENEY, Wash. - Following a rainy Sunday afternoon, the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team hosted its final regular season match, welcoming the Idaho Vandals to the EWU Soccer Field in Cheney, Wash., and fell just shy of victory in a 2-1 double overtime battle.

The game itself lived up to expectations, and was quite the match for the neutral, however for the Eagles, it was an upsetting late 108th minute golden goal by the visitors that sealed the deal. The Eagle squad, which consists of a relentless midfield, fierce attackers and aggressive defenders, not to mention a veteran goalkeeper, end their season after combining for a total of 16 goals and 14 assists on the season.

Prior to the match, EWU took time to honor eight seniors in Kelsee Winston, Sariah Keister, Kaelyn Barnes, Janae Lee, Marissa Mills, Jordyn King, Brittany Delridge and Taylor Matheny, as they geared up for their last home match in an Eagle uniform.

The Eagles came out of the gate ready to compete and take chances as Mareonna Henderson would climb on the shot column first, right before center back Jordyn King fired one towards the bottom right post, forcing Idaho's goalkeeper Avrie Fox to come up with the save. EWU continued to take chances, capitalizing on Idaho's mistakes to eventually get on the scoreboard in the 21st minute after firing two more consecutive shots towards goal. The play started on the right wing as Grace Terrill would collect the ball and drive at her defender, slipping into the attacking third to look up and find a pacing Maddie Morgan, as Morgan took one cheeky touch to find the back of the net from six yards out.

As the first half ended, EWU would outshoot UOI 11-2, with threatening chances by Brittany Delridge, Lulu Sadler and Kaelyn Barnes.

Into the second half, Idaho pulled a goal back, when Sabrina Baca played Hannah Alfaro in behind the Eagle defense as Alfaro did the rest, tying the game 1-1.

The hosts kept up the pressure, allowing only four shots to be taken by the visitors, as they would find space to add five more shots, including a magnificent strike by Morgan that was headed top-bins before Fox parried the ball away.

After the final 90 minutes, the match remained tied 1-1. With the beginning of the first overtime period, both sides mounted attacks, but it was EWU who would see more of the ball, outshooting the Vandals 5-2. With the start of the second overtime period, EWU goalkeeper Kelsee Winston was called upon to make a world class save as the ball was shot back across the face of the goal as Winston stuck a leg out to deflect it past the end line.

However, Idaho kept pushing for a final chance and would find it following a corner kick that was taken by Alyssa Peters who found the head of Rebekah Reyes who slotted in the final goal in the 108th minute to complete the late drama.

The deficit unfortunately ends the 2021 season for the Eagles, who will not advance to the Big Sky Conference Tournament, ending the season 5-12-0 overall and 3-6-0 in league play. The Vandals secured a postseason spot, finishing the regular season 10-5-2 overall and 4-4-1 in conference play.

TOP PERFORMANCES: Maddie Morgan scored the lone goal coming from an assist by Grace Terrill.

Brooke Flores took four shots, both Mya Elder-Hammond and Brittany Delridge took three shots, while Lulu Sadler, Kaelyn Barnes and Mareonna Henderson each took two shots.

EWU goalkeeper Kelsee Winston made three crucial saves.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: EWU out-shot Idaho 24-10, however, both squads only landed five on target.

The Eagles came up with three saves compared to Idaho's four, and conceded only three corner kicks while delivering 15, which ties the number one spot for most corner kicks taken in a single match. The last time the Eagles took 15 corner kicks was back in 2016 at North Dakota.
