Women’s Basketball Returns Home to Host Evergreen

The Eagles play the Geoducks on Sunday at 2 p.m.

GAME NOTES

After playing three games in six days, two of which were on the road, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team is back home to host Evergreen State College this Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. Pacific time.
 
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available on EWUStats.com. Tickets can be purchased on GoEags.com/tickets. A reminder that proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test within 72 hours is required for entry for fans aged 11 or older and a mask must be worn at all times unless actively eating or drinking.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Washington led for 28:57, but lost 64-57 to Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz., on Tuesday night. Eastern Washington led 17-11 after the first and the game was tied 27-27 at the half. Entering the fourth quarter, EWU held a 48-40 lead but were held scoreless for the final 3:26 of the contest while the Lopes went on a 12-0 run to take the decision. In all, the game had six ties and two lead changes.
 
Jacinta Buckley scored a career-high 18 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the field with two three-pointers. She grabbed seven rebounds and also added a steal and a block. Jaydia Martin scored in double figures for the third-straight game. She scored 12 points, all of which came in the second half, and was 4-of-11 from the field with two triples. She also had eight rebounds, and added four assists and two steals.
 
Eastern Washington was 23-of-53 from the field to shoot 43.4 percent, while holding Grand Canyon to 34.8 percent (23-65). The Lopes shot 46.7 percent from three-point range with seven triples, and the Eagles made six to shoot 29 percent. From the free throw line, EWU made 5-of-7 and the Lopes were 11-of-20. Eastern Washington committed 23 turnovers that turned in to 22 GCU points, but forced 18 for 18 points.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: Eastern Washington is 0-3 overall with losses to San Jose State (77-67), Pepperdine (67-48) and Grand Canyon (64-57) to start the year.
 
The Eagles are led by first-year head coach Joddie Gleason. Two players score in double figures for Eastern Washington, led by Jaydia Martin (18.0 ppg) and Jacinta Buckley (12.3 ppg). Martin, who is a true freshman, has scored in double figures in all three games so far this year and ranks third in the Big Sky in points per game. Buckley also ranks second in the conference with 9.33 rebounds per game and has one double-double on the year.
 
Bria Rice leads the Eagles with 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
 
As a team, Eastern Washington shoots 35.4 percent from the field with 57.3 points and 34.0 rebounds per game. They also add 11.3 assists, 7.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.
A LOOK AT EVERGREEN: Evergreen State College is located in Kirkland, Wash., and is a member of the NAIA out of the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Geoducks are 0-2 overall after losses to the University of Providence (84-55) and were edged by Montana State University-Northern 63-62 last Saturday, both of which were at home.
 
Two players average double figures in Caitlin Yenne (12.0) and Monique Bungay (11.0). Yenne is shooting 55.6 percent (10-18) from the field with 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. Rachel Watson (6.0) and Tasha Beckett (5.0) are Evergreen's leading rebounders.
 
The Geoducks sat the 2019-20 season out, but return Trinity Betoney who averaged 20.2 points per game and was named to the All-CCC first team.
 
This is the first-ever meeting between ESC and Eastern Washington.
 
UP NEXT: Eastern Washington hosts another NAIA foe in Multnomah on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. at Reese Court before heading out to Cedar City, Utah, to play Southern Utah for the start of Big Sky play on Dec. 2.
