Eagle Soccer Falls to Gonzaga, 2-0

An early two goal disadvantage decides the Eagles fate

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team competed against the Gonzaga Bulldogs today (Feb. 22) in Spokane, Wash., and fell short to a score of 2-0 at Luger Field. The Bulldogs scored two early goals to establish a healthy advantage over the Eagles.

"We had two mistakes early on in the first half and it cost us the game against an athletic Gonzaga team. We played well for about 70 minutes but unfortunately for us the game is 90 minutes long," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "We are improving very quickly however, and I'm proud of the group. Now we just need to get on a roll. "

Gonzaga applied the pressure early, firing off back-to-back shots in the fifth and sixth minutes which both landed in the hands of keeper Kelsee Winston.

The Bulldogs found the back of the net in the 10th minute and then again in the 20th to take a 2-0 lead.

Sariah Keister recorded three shots in the first half, one of which was on goal, but the Eagles were out-shot 11-to-4 in the first and trailed 2-0 heading into the locker room.

The Eags attempted to gain the momentum with a shot on goal from Mya Elder-Hammond in the 54th minute but it was picked up by goalkeeper Lyza Bosselmann.

Winston kept the Eagles alive following two saves in the 57th and 67th minutes to relieve some pressure on the team.

Nine minutes later Maddie Morgan attempted to bring the Eagles back into the game with a shot in the 76th minute but it flew out left resulting in a goal kick for GU.

Keister took another shot in the 88th minute but failed to capitalize as the Bulldogs grabbed the 2-0 decision.

WIN-LOSS RECORDS: EWU moves to 0-2 overall while GU improves to 2-1.

TOP PERFORMANCES: Sariah Keister fashioned four shots with one on target.
