Eagle Soccer Drops Away Match to Texas Tech, 3-0

EWU goalkeeper Kelsee Winston collected nine saves against Big 12 Opponent

Quotes from EWU Head Coach Missy Strasburg to come.

LUBBOCK, Texas – On a hot Texas sunny day, the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team traveled to Texas Tech (Sept. 19) and dropped the decision to 3-0 at the John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock, Texas. The Eagles held the Red Raiders to a scoreless first half but could not repeat the same in the second half.

The Eagles rallied early on, with the wind going against them, but they still managed to keep the ball mostly in Texas Tech's defensive third for the first 20 minutes in the first half.

Mya Elder-Hammond and Madison Kem were both huge contributing factors in the early success as they both blocked consecutive shots early in the match.

On the counter, Sariah Keister created multiple chances including a timely slotted ball to Brittany Delridge who would force the keeper to come off her line and dive on the ball, in which EWU managed a corner kick set piece out of the opportunity.

Kelse Winston's first call to action occurred on a Texas Tech counter in the 10th minute in which Winston saved a daring shot headed towards the near post. One minute later, Winston secured another diving save, this time from the other post.

With the Eagle defense refusing to break, Winston denied a third near post shot from three yards out in the 22nd minute.

With the first half ending, Winston made two more saves, denying a goal scoring opportunity with a very nicely timed save and a last minute incredible save from a shot eight yards out.

The Eagles faced 14 shots in the first half with most of them flying high over the crossbar as Winston collected six that were placed on frame.

Returning from the locker rooms, Texas Tech forward Ashleigh Williams would sneak one past Winston just two minutes after the whistle blew to take a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute. With the momentum beginning to shift, the Red Raiders would double the lead in the 53rd minute following a ground pass to the near post for Williams to tap in.

As the Eagles refused to give up, Corina Froehle would shoot EWU's first shot on goal as the ball was headed towards the top corner but saved by the Texas Tech goalkeeper Madison White. Keister would join in on the action just minutes later as she had an attempt on goal after taking on five Red Raiders players to force an EWU corner kick from the chance.

As the 70th minute mark approached, the Red Raiders would sneak a third goal past Winston after the initial shot was pushed away but fell to the feet of Williams five yards out. With 90 minutes of regulation, the Eagles closed the match with a 3-0 deficit.

Eastern Washington moves to 2-6 to conclude non-conference play, while TTU improves to 7-1-1 overall. This was the first contest between the two schools, putting EWU 0-1 in their all-time series.
