Eagles Drop in Overtime at Seattle 1-0 from Game-Winning Goal

EWU holds the hosts to a scoreless draw in regular time, but concede a goal in the 98th minute

SEATTLE, WASH. - The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team traveled to kick-off against Seattle University today (Sept. 2) at Championship Field and dropped the decision in overtime to 1-0 in Seattle, Wash. The Eagles kept the Redhawks on their toes through-out the match, however it was SU forward Hallie Bergford who turned at the top of the 18 and slotted one home.

"While obviously we are disappointed by the loss in overtime today, we competed extremely well with a very confident Seattle U team that was coming strong off their tie last week with defending National Champions Santa Clara. This was a much more complete performance by our team, both in mentality and execution, and on both sides of the ball. We created several high percentage chances today, including two in overtime that Seattle U cleared off the line. To take the next step forward as a program, we need to finish those chances," said head coach Missy Strasburg. "As a staff, we recognize that we have changed a lot for this team in a very short amount of time… how we defend, how we attack, and how we train. That, doubled down with the strength of our non-conference schedule, we are supremely proud of how well these young women have, worked, adapted and improved. We get better with every match, and we look forward to returning home on Sunday and responding in front of our home fans."

From the gate, both teams came ready to compete. EWU goalkeeper Kelsee Winston was the first one called to action when she made two diving stops in the third and fourth minute from shots by SU forwards Kacey LaBoda and Sydney Carr. The EWU senior captain keeper would be called upon once more in the ninth minute to make a huge save that was aimed towards the far post.

The Eagles responded with a string of three shots in a span of eight minutes, beginning with freshman Gillian Martin who arrived on the corner of the 18-yard box to get on the end of senior Sariah Keister's pass to beam the ball towards goal. Martin then turned provider with a through-ball pass that set up Keister for a shot, which had everyone on their toes, as it sailed just inches past the upper seven.

As both teams battled back and forth, each fighting to hold on to possession, the match would open up towards the final 15 minutes of the first half. Winston made another huge lower bottom save that was headed far post in the 34th minute. As she scooped the ball up, she found an early outlet for the Eagles to counter on and march down the field.

The Eagles eventually lost possession in their attacking third, however, Keister was able to read the pass and found herself in the opponents 18-yard box for a powerful shot that would be saved near post.

As halftime approached, the Eagles could not find the back of the net but were able to hold the hosts to a 0-0 draw.

Similar to the first half, both squads came ready to fight in the second, skirmishing to win possession for another 45 minutes.

As time winded through the second half, attempts by Lulu Sadler and Brittany Delridge to get the Eagles on the board would put the Redhawks on their heels, but EWU ultimately could not capitalize. After a scoreless 90 minutes, the Eagles headed into the first period of overtime.

As the first 10 minutes of overtime began, the Eagles tested SU with consecutive corner kicks that posed two serious threats, however it was the Redhawks who scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute from a daring low finish in the bottom right corner.

WIN-LOSS RECORDS: EWU moves to 0-4 overall while SU shifts to 3-1-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Eastern Washington took nine shots with three on goal. The Eagles collected nine total saves and took three corner kicks.
