Eastern Washington battled a tough Weber State team on Thursday night at Reese Court. Eastern fell in the game, 0-3, and its record is now 1-3 in the Big Sky and 6-10 overall. The Wildcats improved to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in conference.
"We were pretty flat today," head coach
Jon Haruguchi said. "I know we are doing the right things in this program. I know we are doing it, day in and day out in practice. We just didn't execute tonight. But we have to keep after it and go back out there tomorrow. We have a short turnaround and we have to be better. I was fairly pleased with our service performance tonight. I think we could have gotten after them a little bit more. When we did, it really got them in trouble, but they are a resilient team."
"I'm trying to take it all in and enjoy every moment of it; the wins and the losses," senior setter
Lindsey Russell said. "I'm going to take [playing] all in because it's almost over and I want to appreciate everything because I know I'm going to miss playing when it's over."
Set one opened with competitive action between the two teams and the score was tied at five. The Wildcats put together a 7-1 stretch to take control of the set.
Alyssa Radke found her swing and kept scoring for Eastern, but Weber's attack was too much to keep up with. The Wildcats would go on to win the set, 25-14 and were up 1-0 in the game.
The Eagles were held to a .067 attack percentage in the first set, while Weber State hit a blistering, .556.
Eastern came out aggressive in the second set, with
Katie Fleck and
Sadie Bacon getting in on the scoring. After the score was tied at nine,
Sage Brustad helped organize a 6-1 run to take the lead, recording an ace and a kill. The Wildcats responded with a quick 4-0 spurt to pull within one of the Eagles. After the run, Eastern rebuilt their lead to 19-15, with kills from Radke and Bacon, along with a block and an ace from
Renata Lopez Morales. Weber St. had the answer and ripped off a 5-0 run to take the lead back. Brustad would tie the game at 20 with a kill, but Weber St. would score the next four points and then clinch the set with a kill. The Wildcats won the set 25-21 and had a 2-0 lead in the game.
Eastern again could not find its offense with a .057 attack percentage. Weber St. cooled off to a .242 percentage.
Weber St. felt the momentum in the third set, and they opened with a 7-4 lead over the Eagles. Despite the score, Eastern did not give up and battled back to tie the set at seven, by way of back-to-back aces from Lopez Morales. After the Wildcats had a 9-8 lead, they raced past the Eagles with a 7-0 run to lead 16-8. Weber St. went on to win the set, 25-13 and won the game 3-0.
