The 2021-22 outdoor track and field season continues for five Eastern Washington University student-athletes next week at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville, Ark., on May 25-28.
Â
Action kicks off for the Eagles on Thursday, May 26 with
Katrina Terry in the pole vault,
Vernice Keyes in the hammer throw, and
Maggie Nelson in the javelin. The men's squad will compete on Friday, May 27 with
Bobby Say in the triple jump and
Alex Bishop in the high jump.
Â
The top 12 athletes in each event will punch their tickets to the NCAA Division I Championships that take place on June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Last season, the Eagles were represented by Morgan
Fossen at the championships in the pole vault.
Fossen went on to earn second-team All-American honors. The last male to advance to the championships was
Keshun McGee in both the triple jump and the long jump in 2019.
Â
Live stream for the entire competition will be on ESPN.com.
Â
Terry ranks 37
th in the West region in the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 13-3 ¾ that she set this season at the Beach Invitational, ranking her seventh all-time in program history. This is Terry's second-straight West regional appearance. She is fresh off a second-place finish in the pole vault at the Big Sky Championships, which marked the fourth All-Big Sky honor of her career and the third-straight outdoors.
Â
Keyes is 46
th in the West region in the hammer throw, qualifying for the preliminary round after a season-best toss of 191-0 at the Big Sky Conference Championships where she placed second. This is the second-straight West regional appearance for Keyes.
Â
Nelson enters the first West regional meet of her career 33
rd in the javelin. In a then-school record performance at the Buc Scoring Multi meet earlier in the season, Nelson tossed a personal best of 158-8 to rank her seventh all-time in program history. She is coming off of a third-place finish in both the heptathlon and the javelin at the Big Sky Championships last week. Nelson broke her school record in the heptathlon after totaling 5,173 points.
"Making it to the NCAA West Regional Meet can be challenging to do so I am very proud of our qualifiers. Terry, Keyes, and Nelson have been three of our most consistent Eagles and three that have also been our most valuable so it doesn't surprise me at all that they will be representing us at West Regionals," explained head women's coach
Marcia Mecklenburg. "Given the crazy spring that we have had I feel that they haven't really reached their potential yet, so they all may surprise some people."
Â
Say is the highest-ranked Eagle heading into next week's competition, as he ranks 27
th in the triple jump with a mark of 51-0 ¾. The mark is fifth all-time at EWU, and he won the event at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in April with the leap. Say finished fourth at the Big Sky Championships in the triple jump and is making his first-ever West regional appearance.
Bishop cleared 6-10 ¾ at the Oregon State High Performance meet and won the event. The mark places him 47
th in the West region, which will be the first preliminary meet of his career. At the Big Sky Championships, Bishop made his first six attempts and finished in second-place with a mark of 6-9 ¾, the first All-Big Sky honor with the Eagles.
"We are absolutely thrilled to be taking Say and Bishop to the championships. Coach Nielsen has done great work in getting these two ready to compete at the highest level collegiate track and field. How good are the athletes in this meet? Say and Bishop will be competing alongside athletes who will be on the USA national team that will be in the World Track & Field Championships later this summer," explained Kerr. "This meet is also an opportunity to showcase our EWU athletes on the national stage. It's a very unique experience that we believe both Say and Bishop will be able to do again next year."
Â
The Big Sky Conference will be represented by 107 athletes in Fayetteville, Ark.
"It is going to be an exciting meet and the Eagles are ready to compete," stated Mecklenburg.
