Day Two Results
Â
The Eastern Washington University women's track and field team had
Maggie Nelson,
Katrina Terry, and
Vernice Keyes compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds today (May 26) in Fayetteville, Ark., at the John McDonnell Field.Â
Â
The top 12 athletes in each event will make their way to the NCAA Division I Championships that take place on June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.Â
Â
Terry placed 24
th in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-11 3/4. This is her second-straight West regional appearance. Going into today Terry ranked 37
th in the West region in the pole vault with a personal best mark of 13-3 3/4 that she set this season at the Beach Invitational, ranking seventh in program history.Â
Â
"Terry finished the day for us, vaulting under the lights. She had beautiful clearances at her first two heights.  She almost cleared her third height, 13-5 3/4, on all three attempts which would have been a two inch personal record. Her 24th place finish was the best finish of the day for the EWU crew. Hats off to coach
Eric Allison for keeping EWU a pole vault force on the national scene," explained head women's coach
Marcia Mecklenburg.
Â
Nelson competed in the women's javelin throw and placed 41
st with a mark of 137-4.  In Nelson's career this is her first West regional meet for the javelin. Before this meet she was 33
rd in the javelin from her mark of 158-8 at the Buc Scoring Multi meet.Â
Â
"There is no one more determined than Nelson. She is one of the most fun athletes to watch compete because she is full of energy. I call it 'Maggie fire'. She struggled today with her throws, but the 'Maggie fire' was there and she gave it her all in all of her throws," stated Mecklenburg.
Â
Keyes competed in the women's hammer throw and placed 37
th with a mark of 182-6. This was her second-straight West regional appearance. Going into the NCAA West Regionals today Keyes was 46
th in the West region in the hammer throw, which qualified her for the preliminary rounds today after her best toss of 191-0 at the Big Sky Conference Championships where she placed second.Â
Â
Mecklenburg explained, "Keyes started the day for the Eagles. I know she wanted to throw farther but with the season she has had I am pleased with her performance. I said this for Big Sky Championships, and it is the same for the NCAA Preliminary rounds, the goal is to finish the competition higher than you go in ranked. Vernice did that."
Â
"I am so thankful that all three of these athletes chose to come to Eastern. They have been a blessing to the team and have been great representatives for Eastern Washington University.  Tomorrow, we get to watch the guy's
Bobby Say and
Alex Bishop in the triple jump and high jump. Time to cheer them on to top-twelve finishes," explained Mecklenburg.
Â
Two men on the Eastern Washington University track and field team will compete tomorrow (May 27) at the third day of the NCAA West Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark., at the John McDonnell Field. Bishop will compete in the men's high jump at 12:30 p.m. Pacific Time and Say will compete in the men's triple jump at 4 p.m. PT.Â
