Eastern Washington women's soccer faced San Jose State on Thursday night, coming up short 2-1. It was a tail of two halves for the Eagles, after falling behind 2-0 early in the first. Eastern clamped down in the second half and were boosted by a goal from
Madison Kem, but the Spartans held on for the win.
SJSU started the match fast, striking for a goal in the sixth minute. The Spartans were in control in the first half, recording 10 shots, while the Eagles recorded two. SJSU added to its lead in the 26
th minute with another goal and they had a 2-0 advantage. In the 31
st minute,
Maddie Morgan almost put Eastern on the scoreboard after racing past her defender and putting a shot on net.
In the second half, Eastern made adjustments and elevated its aggressiveness. Kem would fire off the first of three quick shots in the 53
rd minute, with the first being blocked by the Spartans, followed by another shot that was saved. The third attempt found the back of the net and Kem had her third goal of the season and Eastern pulled close to SJSU at 1-2.
The Spartans pushed to reestablish the momentum, recording nine shots in the half.
In the final minute of the match, Eastern dribbled the ball into SJSU territory. The Eagles put the ball into the box and Kem headed the ball on goal, but it was saved by Shayla Sugai. The Spartans won the match 2-1.
Eastern Washington fell to 3-4-2 on the season and SJSU improved to 1-3-3.
