Eastern Washington swept the weekend after defeating Weber State. The Eagles dominated their match today(Sep. 25) against Weber State, winning 3-1.
"It feels awesome. We were really tight with Weber last year and were up, before giving it all back. For us, it was kind of an avenging that match moment," head coach
Missy Strasburg said. "I can't understate how important it is to come out of the weekend 2-0 and be at the top of the table. The Big Sky already had a bunch of weird results Thursday and Friday. It is going to be tight to wire for the postseason. Coming out with two wins and a solid defensive performance, along with the scores, is really important for us."
Within the first 12 minutes of play,
Maddie Morgan connected with
Gillian Martin to put Eastern on top 1-0. Martin, getting her second goal of the weekend, scored the first goal in today's match.
"[Gillian] finally broke open on Thursday and she's a different player right now," Strasburg said of Martin's goal. "She is playing looser and collecting the ball cleaner. It was like a 10,000lb gorilla off her back after scoring Thursday. I think we're going to see a lot more what we thought we were going to see earlier in the year. A lot of her pace and technical ability to turn and get around players. It just gives her confidence to be in front of the goal now."
In the 18
th minute, Morgan was quick with the ball once again as
Grace Terrill delivered a great pass for Morgan to score. In four minutes, Morgan had herself an assist and a goal.
"[Maddie] is setting an incredible example with her mentality and extra effort at this level," Strasburg said of Morgan's goal. "With such a young team, we can't say enough about how important her effort has been. It helps our younger players and also the returners as well."
Before the first half was over, the Eagles scored themselves another goal.
Corina Froehle set up
Chloe Pattison for a great goal in the upper portion of the net.
Strasburg talked about Pattison's impact on the team, "Chloe has been an unexpected and a situation that happened super late for us. She's here to be a dual-sport athlete, which is awesome. I can't say enough for the administration and the Track and Field staff for supporting her endeavor. She's a great personality and fits right into our culture."
With Pattison, Morgan, and Martin scoring, they each have two goals on the season.
Skyler Matthews was also active for the Eagles, putting up a shot on goal that barely got blocked.
At goalie,
Kamryn Willoughby only allowed one goal today, off of a corner kick. Willoughby got six saves on the day, making each one count.
For Weber State, they were able to score their first goal in the second half. As Olivia Tucker took the corner kick for the Wildcats, Morgan Furmaniak was there for the header at the 56
th minute. Weber State brought the score to 3-1 but couldn't connect for the rest of the match.
Eastern Washington improved to 2-0-0 in conference and 5-5-2 this season. Weber State fell to 0-2-0 in the Big Sky and 1-9-0 overall.Â
