CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington women's soccer celebrated senior day on Sunday at EWU Soccer Field, while hosting Northern Colorado. The Bears defeated Eastern, 4-0 after building a three-goal lead in the first half. The Eagles finished the season with a record of 1-6-1 in the Big Sky and 2-14-1 overall.
Prior to the game, Eastern honored Kiara Matson, Corina Froehle, Madison Kem and Maddie Morgan as the team's four seniors.
Head coach Missy Strasburg discussed the team's four graduating players, "We talked about the seniors as a team. Every class leaves a legacy. This class is leaving nothing but a positive legacy. They are the most competitive and committed players, in training and on gameday. They have done everything right during their time here, especially during this season which was difficult. There has never been a day where I doubted their effort, attitude, impact or commitment. When we see this team bounce back next year and the year after, we will owe a lot back to these seniors who are leaving. That's the standard of this program. They are the single hardest players in training, while also carrying this ability to connect and bring joy in a positive way. We definitely need more of that and they are that special."
The Bears were aggressive at the beginning of the game, creating multiple scoring opportunities. UNC scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of game time. They added another goal in the 36th minute to lead 3-0 at halftime.
Right out of the half, the Bears scored in the 47th minute to build a 4-0 advantage.
One minute later, Madison Kem fired a shot on net trying to get the team back in the game, but it was saved by UNC's Kaya Lindberg.
Maddie Morgan would put two shots on goal trying to battle back in the game, with both being saved.
"Senior day is always hard. You either get a special performance or a tough one like today," Strasburg explained. "The emotionality [of senior day] is a lot harder than people think it is and its impact"
