Eastern uses full team effort to cruise to first win of the season

Seven Eags hit double figures in home opener over Walla Walla

CHENEY, Wash. — The Eastern Washington Eagles (1-4) got in the win column for the first time this season, pulling away from the visiting Walla Walla Wolves (1-3), 97-46 on Wednesday night in Cheney. Ten different players scored for EWU, including seven with 10+ points.

The Wolves hung around for the first nine minutes of the game, trailing by only 6 points with under 12 minutes to go in the first half. The Eagle defense took over from there, sparking an 18-0 run and 25-6 finish to the half to earn a commanding 51-24 advantage into the break. EWU held Walla Walla to 8-for-33 shooting (24.2%), including just 1-for-11 from beyond the arc.

The second half was more of the same for the Eagles as they cruised to the victory over the Wolves, who compete in the NAIA's Cascade Conference. Eastern scored 9 of the first 11 field goals and led by as many as 53 down the stretch.

EWU finished with 27 assists on 37 made field goals, shooting 37/67 overall (55.2%), including 12/35 from 3-point range, adding 11 free throws on 14 attempts. They held the Wolves to 27.4% shooting on the night (17/62), 3/20 from 3 (15%).

Wednesday night was a brief respite for the Eags as they boast the Big Sky Conference's strongest strength of schedule this season, playing five Pac-12 opponents, one SEC, one Big 12 and one Mountain West. They head back on the road next week for two games in three days against Pac-12 foes, facing Washington State in Pullman on Monday, Nov. 27 (7 p.m.), then Southern California in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Nov. 29 (8 p.m.). Their next home game will be on Dec. 13 versus Portland Bible College.
