Eagles prepare to close out spring football at Red-White Game

Offense and defense will battle it out for bragging rights at Roos Field on Friday

CHENEY, Wash. — The Eastern Washington University football team will close out its 2023 spring schedule with the annual Red-White Game at Roos Field on Friday at 6 p.m., pitting the offense versus the defense in an intrasquad scrimmage. The game marks the close of a 14-game practice slate that began on April 7.

Several upperclassmen and projected contributors for the 2023 season sat out of last Saturday's warm-up scrimmage in Cheney, allowing younger players the opportunity to get more reps. Numbers are particularly thin on the defensive line, but head coach Aaron Best pointed out that the spring is a good time to develop a competitive mindset within the team.

"Spring is a time to get back to the basics, and do the basics better," said head coach Aaron Best before practice on Wednesday. "It allows younger guys to compete in a non-scout team setting. Developing some of that competition is good."

Offense will line up against defense this year in place of a traditional team versus team format, with the defense starting with a 26-point lead on the scoreboard. The offense will try to close the gap while the defense will continue to earn points with big plays such as forced turnovers.

"As a head coach, you're right in the middle. You're rooting for stops (for the defense), then all of a sudden you're leaning on the offensive side to get more plays," added Best.

The game is free and open to the public to attend. Gates will open at 5 p.m. It will also be broadcast locally on SWX and streamed to ESPN+.

"Bragging rights are great, but it's whoever has the bragging rights at about 8 o'clock on Friday night."
