Eagles drop conference opener to Bengals

Morgan and Martin score, but ISU gets the result

POCATELLO, Idaho — The Big Sky schedule began for Eastern Washington on Thursday afternoon, as they faced Idaho State on the road. Eastern fell in a 3-2 result, as the Bengals scored three unanswered goals to take control in the game. The Eagles are now 1-9 on the season.

"We are going to continue to fight, one training and one game at a time; working to remember who we are as a team and individuals and what we are all capable of," head coach Missy Strasburg said. "This group has shown the ability to compete against top level opponents, and that needs to be the standard of effort and commitment to detail from every player. Huge credit to Maddie Morgan, who continues to score great goals, Madison Kem who bosses the midfield and Gillian Martin who has been massively impactful helping out in the back the last two matches. We know how tight the Big Sky is, as a conference, and know that every match will come down to inches and seconds. As we move forward to Sunday, we as a staff, and as a team, need to find the solutions in both mindset and on-field-play to win those inches and get a result."

The scoring started from a familiar face, as Maddie Morgan found the net once again in the 21st minute. Delani Walker threw the ball in from the sideline and Chloe Pattison collected the ball in the box. Pattison turned and shot on goal, but the shot was deflected by ISU's Kelsey Jargstorf. Morgan was there for the rebound and headed the ball into the goal.

The Bengals evened the game up in the 27th minute. ISU then went ahead 2-1 a little over a minute later on a second-chance shot.

At halftime, the Eagles trailed the Bengals by one score.

In the 73rd minute, the Bengals extended their lead to 3-1 with a score from Isabella Winton.

Eastern responded in the 76th minute, as Morgan quick-tapped the ball, off a Kendall Moore pass, into the box and found Gillian Martin on her way to the goal. Martin fired a shot past Jargstorf and the ISU lead was down to 3-2.

Morgan fired a shot off in the 79th minute that went off the top post to just miss the equalizer.

The Bengals held on for the 3-2 victory over the Eagles.
