SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah. — It was a historic week in Utah for Eastern Washington women's golf as the team set a new program record for 54 holes at the 54 for IX Tournament, hosted by the Big Sky. The team finished on Tuesday afternoon with a score of 881, breaking the previous record of 889 set at the Big Sky Championships in 2016.
"I'm extremely proud of the way we played this week. We broke a school record by eight strokes shooting 881 this week," head coach Brenda Howe said. "It's been six years since we've shot three rounds under 300 in the same tournament, and to do that, this week, on a pretty long course feels great."
Round two was the Eagles' best 18-hole score at the TalonsCove Golf Club, shooting 289. EWU started the tournament with a 298 yesterday and finished strong with a 294 today. Eastern tied for 6th with Idaho on the team leaderboard.
True freshman Gabriella Ilardi placed in the top-20 for her first career start, tying for 14th on the individual leaderboard. Ilardi had a total score of 216, shooting two rounds under par.
Howe spoke about her freshman's performance this week, "Gabriella [Ilardi] was outstanding playing in her first event in the lineup. Players can go their entire college career and not break 70, and she pulled it off today with a 69. She was steady for three-straight rounds."
Brooke Mahler also had a top-20 finish, shooting 219 for the week. The sophomore fired off a 72 in the second round and finished in a tie for 19th at the tournament.
Kami Twining posted a 71 in round two and was tied for 31st on the individual leaderboard.
Eastern placed above four Big Sky programs including Northern Colorado (8th), Montana (T10th), Idaho State (12th) and Portland State (13th).
Sacramento State won the tournament with a total score of 847 and 14 strokes ahead of second-place Northern Arizona.
