This Week in Eastern Athletics: April 8 - 14

Golf closes out the regular season, Tennis teams celebrate senior day, Track heads to Cali

CHENEY, Wash. — The regular season is coming to a close for several Eagle team's this week as the year winds down. Women's golf begins its final tournament today before the Big Sky Championships next week. Women's tennis plays its final regular season match on Friday and men's tennis plays its final home match on Sunday. Track and Field is sending athletes to four events this week, with three in California. Volleyball plays its second spring match on Saturday.

Women's Golf — at Bobcat Desert Classic (Monday April 8 - Wednesday April 10, All Day)

Eastern Washington is in Goodyear, Ariz. for the Bobcat Desert Classic, hosted by Montana State. It is the Eagles' final regular season tournament as they prepare for the Big Sky Championships next Monday. EWU will play one round for the next three days at the Golf Club of Estrella. 

Eastern has been off since March 17 when they played at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz. The Eagles had a total score of 940 (+76) in three rounds. Gabriella Ilardi shot 76 in the final two rounds to place 66th on the individual leaderboard. 

Women's Tennis (3-15, 1-6) — vs. Sacramento State (Friday, April 12 at 11 a.m.)

The Eagles play their final regular season match this week, hosting Sacramento State on Friday at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse. The match begins at 11 a.m. and will be senior day as the team celebrates Jennifer Kida and Scout Mathews.

This past week, Eastern completed its road schedule with matches against Idaho State and Weber State. EWU dropped the match against the Bengals, 6-1, and to the Wildcats, 5-2. Leandra Nizetic won her singles match at the No. 4 spot against ISU, while Jennifer Kida and Isabella Foshee had wins against WSU at No. 2 and No. 5 respectively. 

Men's Tennis (0-13, 0-4)  — vs. Montana (Thursday, April 11 at 11 a.m.), vs. Sacramento State (Sunday, April 14 at 10 a.m.)

Eastern plays its final two home matches this week, starting with Montana On Thursday at 11 a.m. EWU then hosts Sacramento State on Sunday for senior day, where the team will honor its lone senior Erik Sarlvik.

The Eagles traveled to play Northern Arizona this past Friday, falling to the Lumberjacks 7-0. The 'Jacks grabbed the momentum with a win in doubles and then swept the six singles matches to top Eastern. 

Track & Field — at Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (Thursday, April 11, All Day), at Bryan Clay Invitational (Thursday-Saturday, April 13, All Day), at Whitworth Twilight Invite (Thursday, All Day), at Beach Invitational (Friday, April 12-Saturday, All Day)

EWU prepares for a busy week of competition with four different meets. The team has three in California and one close to home in Spokane from Thursday to Friday. The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and Beach Invitational will both be in Long Beach, Calif., while the Bryan Clay Invite is in Azusa, Calif. 

Returning to competition last week, Eastern computed at the Whitworth Peace Meet in Spokane. Caitlin Simmons broke the EWU and her previous record in the triple jump with a 12.70m mark. She remains the top performer in the Big Sky rankings this season. The team won six events, including Madelyn Knight winning both the 100m and 400m hurdles. Knight improved on her personal best with a time of 13.92 seconds, maintaining her position at number two on the program's all-time list. 

Volleyball — at Gonzaga (Saturday, April 13 at 12 p.m.)

The Eagles play their third match of the spring this Saturday, driving to Spokane to play Gonzaga at 12 p.m. Eastern has two home matches remaining on the schedule, with Washington State on April 20 at 11 a.m. and Eastern Oregon on April 27 at 1:30 p.m..
