FARMINGTON, Utah - For the first time in his Eastern Washington career,
Efton Chism III earned Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference today. Chism earned the honor after a career game in EWU's 42-27
opening night win over Monmouth this past Thursday.
Leading the way in the game, Chism caught 12 passes for a career-best 173 yards and scored three touchdowns. His touchdown total matched his career-best and the 12 catches were one shy of a career mark.
Chism is now eighth all-time in program history with 2,714 yards and tied Kendrick Bourne for seventh all-time with 27 receiving touchdowns.
In the season opener, the Eagles outgained the Hawks, 547 to 439, in total yards.
Chism started the scoring for Eastern against Monmouth, catching a pass from Kekoa Visperas and ran it in, along the sideline, from 30 yards out. The Monroe, Wash. native struck again in the third quarter, with a catch across the middle from Visperas and hurdling into the endzone for a 12-yard score. Chism's third touchdown developed on a quick out route, as he dodged one defender and dragged another into the endzone for the 16-yard score.
UC Davis linebacker Porter Conners won defensive Player of the Week and Montana's Ty Morrison won special team's Player of the Week.
The national media also took notice of Chism's game as FCS Stats Perform included him as an honorable mention in their Player of the Week award.
Eastern Washington stays in Cheney this week and hosts Drake on Saturday, September 7 for a 4 p.m. kickoff. The game airs on SWX and is streamed live on ESPN+.
