Eagles dominate in final exhibition game

Eastern Washington won decisively over Whitworth on Wednesday night

CHENEY, Wash. — The regular season starts next week and Eastern Washington women's basketball already looks in midseason form. Eastern defeated Whitworth, 85-35 at Reese Court tonight, leading from the opening whistle.

"We love the opportunity to put uniforms on and have an exhibition game where you can work out some of the kinks," head coach Joddie Gleason said. "I thought our team dialed in with our scout and defended well. We forced some turnovers and got out in transition and scored a little better. That settled us down a little bit. We played a lot of people and it's just different when you come in, for the first time, on Reese Court. Everybody who came in was a little nervous but then they settled down and saw some really bright spots."

EWU separated from the Pirates in the second quarter, using a 20-0 run to go up by 32 at halftime. The run extended to 22-0 in the third quarter before the Pirates ended their drought with a jumper.

The Eagles were led by 17 points from both Ella Gallatin and Caitie Gingras in the game. Kourtney Grossman picked up where she left off last season, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

Freshman Elyn Bowers scored 13 points, while Léa-line Romain added eight.

Eastern shot 49.2 percent from the floor, while Whitworth finished with a 21.3 percentage. On the boards, the Eagles held a commanding 46-23 advantage.

"Ella Gallatin had a phenomenal game. It was great to schedule Whitworth because she was able to play against her sister. That was nice for her whole family to see in [Ella's] senior year. I appreciate Whitworth for coming over for this game," Gleason added.

Ella's sister, Addyson, scored two points and had two rebounds for the Pirates.
