CHENEY, Wash. — It's Thanksgiving week and Eastern Washington athletics has both basketball teams on the court. Men's basketball has one game tomorrow night against North Texas in Denton, Texas. Women's basketball is off until Black Friday, when they travel for a holiday tournament, playing two games in Portland.
Men's Basketball - at North Texas (Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 5:00 p.m. PST)
The Eagles head to Denton, Texas to take on North Texas to take on the Mean Green ahead of Thanksgiving break. Eastern is 0-1 against North Texas, but the last time they faced off was in 1993.
This past week, the Eagles went 1-1 featuring a breakthrough and a setback, starting with a 91–73 home win over Eastern Oregon before falling 92–65 on the road at Central Arkansas. In their first victory of the season, the Eagles showcased balance, energy, and improved second-half execution. Isaiah Moses led with 22 points, while Straton Rogers posted the team's first double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds. EWU shot over 52 percent and dominated the glass, building momentum through defense, second-chance scoring, and timely outside shooting.
That encouraging performance didn't carry over three nights later, as EWU fell behind early at UCA and never recovered. The Bears blitzed the Eagles with a 14–0 run to open the game and turned Eastern's turnovers into 38 points. Despite 12 made threes from EWU and a 17-point effort from Moses, UCA stayed hot from the perimeter, knocking down 15 threes and shooting 55 percent overall.
Across the two games, the Eagles saw both the potential of their offensive depth and the urgency of tightening their defensive identity. Lundgren emphasized that these early-season contests are about learning, growth, and finding the consistency needed as Eastern heads into a demanding road stretch.
Women's Basketball - vs. Nevada (Friday, Nov. 28 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time), at Portland (Sunday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m.)
Eastern Washington will spend this holiday weekend at the Portland Invitational tournament with two games on the schedule. EWU begins against Nevada on Friday (Nov. 28), followed by a matchup against the host-team Portland on Sunday (Nov. 30). Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
Eastern had a home and road game this past week, going 1-1 to put their season record at 2-3. On Monday night (11/17), the Eagles defended Reese Court in a 78-67 win over Cal Poly. EWU was in the lead for the majority of the game, but a 10-2 run in the third quarter gave them the cushion they needed to hold off a fourth-quarter run from the Mustangs.
Caitie Gingras posted a career-best 16 points, while
Kourtney Grossman dropped her second-straight double-double, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Yesterday (Nov. 23), Eastern traveled to Spokane to play Gonzaga, dropping the matchup, 79-60 to the Zags. Throughout the game, the Eagles had trouble containing Gonzaga's offense, as they shot above 45 percent in each quarter. The Zags shot 50.8 for the game as a whole and EWU shot 35.8 percent from the floor. Eastern made a run in the third quarter to cut the lead down to six, but could not reel Gonzaga back any further as the comeback fell short.
Elyn Bowers set a new season-best with 21 points on 50 percent shooting.
Only five games into her career, Bowers is showing her versatility as scorer, with 15-plus points in each game. She leads the team with 17.6 points per game, while shooting 54.2 percent overall and 50.0 from three-point range. Bowers is also second on the team with 11 assists and 10 steals.
As a team, Eastern is productive behind the arc, shooting 35.9 percent and averaging 8.4 made threes a game. The stats rank third and second in the Big Sky. EWU is also limiting its mistakes, carrying a plus-four turnover margin, ranking this in the conference.
