Men’s and women’s basketball prepare for the home stretch of the regular season, men’s tennis travels to Hawaii, women’s tennis travels to Portland

2/18/2025 10:29:00 AM

CHENEY, Wash. — The regular season for men's and women's basketball is coming to an end in two weeks and both teams are riding winning streaks. Women's basketball stays in Cheney for two games, while the men's team travels to play two. Men's tennis gets a mid-season vacation trip to Hawaii for two matches this weekend. Women's tennis drives west for a non-conference match against Portland.

Women's Basketball – vs. Northern Colorado (Thursday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. Pacific Time), vs. Northern Arizona (Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.) - Get Tickets

Eastern stays at home this week for two of its final three games at Reese Court. The Eagles face off against Northern Colorado on Thursday night for the second time this season, followed by the second meeting against Northern Arizona on Saturday afternoon. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

EWU had only one game this past week, and was able to extend its winning streak to three games after a
63-60 win over Idaho. Eastern built a double digit lead at halftime, but the Vandals slowly chipped away at it in the second half. Idaho managed to tie the game at 60 with a little over a minute in regulation. After the Eagles missed a go-ahead shot, Idaho had the ball but also missed its shot. The Vandals pulled down the offensive rebound, but Alexis Pettis swiped the ball away. In a split-second decision, Pettis fired an outlet pass to Peyton Howard as she was racing down the court. Howard received the pass and put the ball up for a layup, while being fouled in the process. The graduate student converted the free throw to help EWU survive the Idaho comeback. Howard scored 19 points in the game and Pettis finished with 13.

Earlier this season, Eastern
fell to NAU 75-63, with Jaecy Eggers leading the team with 16 points. The Eagles then dropped its first game against UNC, 66-57, as Kourtney Grossman posted 17 points and 17 rebounds.

Howard continues as the go-to scorer for the Eagles, leading the team 14.0 points per game, fifth in the Big Sky. Her 39.5 field goal percentage is also fourth in the conference. Howard averages 3.5 assists per game to rank seventh on the leaderboards. She also averages 1.6 steals per game to tie for seventh in the league.

Pettis has stepped into the starting role this season, tying for fourth on the Eagles with 8.6 points per game. She leads Eastern carrying a 37.3 three-point percentage.

In the win over Idaho, Grossman nearly had another double double, tallying 11 points and nine rebounds. Grossman retains her spot on top of the Big Sky rebounding leaderboard with a 10.1 per game average.

Men's Basketball – at Northern Colorado (Thursday, February 20 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time), at Northern Arizona (Saturday. February 22 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time)

Eastern Washington aims to extend its four-game winning streak when they face Northern Colorado on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m. PST, followed by Northern Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. PST.

Mason Williams has been a standout performer for the Eagles in the Big Sky Conference, leading the league in free throw percentage at an impressive 86.1%. Teammate Nic McClain has also shined, ranking first in steals (2.09 per game) and fifth in assists (3.65 per game). Emmett Marquardt ranks fourth in blocked shots with an average of 0.84 per game.

In their most recent win, Andrew Cook led the Eagles with a career-high 29 points, while Marquardt and Sebastian Hartmann also contributed double-digit performances. Although the team struggled with consistency, they were strong defensively, forcing nine steals and recording 16 assists. Head coach Dan Monson praised the team for their resilience and ability to fight back despite offensive and defensive challenges.

The game was close throughout, with Idaho holding a narrow lead. Marquardt's hot shooting and Cook's late free throws helped Eastern tie the game at 73-73. In the final moments, Cook sank two crucial free throws to give the Eagles a 75-73 victory—their first lead of the game.

Women's Tennis –
at Portland (Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. Pacific Time)

After a long road trip to Boise this last weekend, Eastern Washington will travel to Oregon to take on the Portland Pilots.

The Eagles (2-5) will take on the Pilots (1-3) Saturday, Feb. 22nd at 11 a.m. EWU Tennis and the Portland Pilots will meet in their 31st all-time meeting. The Pilots hold a 25-5 overall record over the Eagles. Eastern last beat the Pilots in 2021 in Portland 5-2.

EWU Tennis split their road trip to Boise. After losing 7-0 to Boise State on Friday, Feb. 14th, the Eagles responded well with a 7-0 victory over the College of Idaho on Saturday. It was Eastern's first road victory of the season.

"The girls felt overall good about their energy and their teamwork and have been training hard to get that win and will use it to build confidence as we move forward to our next match," said head coach Dustin Hinson.

Men's Tennis –
at Hawaii Pacific (Friday, February 21 at 4 p.m. Pacific Time), at University of Hawaii (Saturday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time)

The Eagles continue their five match road stretch this weekend in Honolulu, Hawaii. Eastern will take on Hawaii Pacific (2-0) Friday, Feb. 21st at 4 p.m. PT and the University of Hawaii Saturday (2-7), Feb. 22nd at 6 p.m. PT.

EWU Tennis and Hawaii Pacific will face off in their first all-time meeting. Eastern and Hawaii will meet for their second all-time matchup, with Hawaii taking the first meeting in 1995 when they hosted the Eagles and won 6-1

The Eagles fell to the Vandals last week in Moscow 7-0. It was the first of two meetings this season between the two teams, with this match being a non-conference matchup. In the No. 1 doubles match of Tyler Dalos/Caden Kammerer, the two would impress in their first action together with a 6-2 victory. This was the ninth career doubles win for Dalos, and his second of the season. Kammerer picked up his team-leading third doubles win of the season, and the 11th of his career.
