CHENEY, Wash. — Spring is in full gear for Eastern Washington athletics as the season moves forward. Women's tennis hosts its first conference matches of the season on Saturday and Sunday. With four wins in its last five matches, men's tennis is on the road for three matches this weekend in California. Football's spring schedule kicks off with its first three practices this week.
Women's Tennis – vs. Weber State (Saturday, March 15 at 11 a.m. Pacific Time), vs. Northern Arizona (Sunday, March 16 at 11 a.m.) - Free Admission
After a week of rest, EWU will continue conference play with their Big Sky home opener this weekend. The Eagles will host Weber State Saturday, Mar. 15 at 11 a.m., and then will host Northern Arizona, Sunday, Mar. 16 at 11 a.m.
Eastern and Weber State will play in their 30th all-time meeting. The Wildcats hold the advantage over the Eagles 22-7, winning last year's matchup in Ogden 5-2. EWU won the previous time they hosted WSU when they won 4-3 in 2023.
After a date with the Wildcats, the Eagles will host the Lumberjacks the following day in their 28th all-time meeting. NAU holds the advantage 25-2, with winning last year's matchup 6-1 in Flagstaff. Dropping the last six contests, the Eagles last defeated the Lumberjacks in 2016 when they played host and won 4-3.
In their conference opener against Idaho, the Eagles would drop the tight contest 4-3.
Isabella Foshee would take the No. 1 singles position for the Eagles, and win a thriller three-set match. Foshee left Moscow with a 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-3 victory for her third singles dual-match win of the season, 10th conference singles win, and the 20th overall win of her career.
In the No. 5 and No. 6 position, both freshman Zoe Pradel and Olivia Marais won their matches in their Big Sky debuts. Both would grind out a tiebreaker win and impress in their matches,
Zoe Pradel in the No. 5 position came out victorious 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7), for her second singles dual-match win of the season.
Olivia Marais would represent the Eagles in the No. 6 position for the fourth time this season. After a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) win, Marais recorded her second singles dual-match win of the season.
Men's Tennis – at UC Davis (Friday, March 14 at 1 p.m. Pacific Time), at Sacramento State (Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m.), at Pacific (Sunday, March 16 at 10 a.m.)
After opening up Big Sky play last weekend, the Eagles will travel to California for three matches in three days for the second time this season. EWU will face off against UC Davis Friday, Mar. 14 at 1 p.m, Sacramento State Saturday, Mar. 15 at 1 p.m., and then wrap up the weekend at Pacific Sunday, Mar. 16 at 10 a.m.
Eastern and UC Davis will meet for the sixth time, and the fifth straight time in Davis. The Aggies own a 4-1 advantage over the Eagles, and won their previous meeting 6-1 back in 2019.
EWU will then regroup and face Sacramento State in a conference clash on Saturday. The Eagles and the Hornets will face off in their 25th all-time meeting, with the Hornets taking last year's match up 7-0 in Cheney. Eastern will look for their third win all-time over Sacramento State, as the Hornets hold the 22-2 advantage over the Eagles.
To round out the weekend, EWU will play Pacific in their third all-time meeting. The two split the previous two matches, and last played in 1991 when Pacific defeated the Eagles 8-1.
Last week the Eagles opened conference play 1-1 with conference matches against Idaho and Portland State, and moved to 4-10 overall and 1-1 in Big Sky play. After dropping their conference opener in Moscow to the Vandals 6-1, the Eagles dominated in their 6-1 home conference opener against the Vikings.
The Eagles clinched their first win over the Vikings since 2017, and gave Eastern their first Big Sky conference win since 2020 when they beat Idaho State 5-2. They also clinched their first conference home opener win since 2018 when they defeated Weber State 4-3, and have already recorded their most wins since the 2019 season. It was their largest conference win since 2017 when they traveled to Utah and defeated Southern Utah 6-1.
Two Eagle players moved to 6-6 in singles dual-matches after their wins over Portland State (Tyler Waddock and Caden Kammerer). Tyler Waddock impressed this weekend with back-to-back tie-breaker wins in the No. 1 singles position in wins over the Vandals and Vikings. Waddock is 2-0 in conference singles play, and has now won five singles dual-matchs in a row.
Football – Spring Practice (Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 4 p.m.) - Free Admission
The preparation for the 2025 season kicks into high gear this week for EWU football as the team begins spring practices. Monday will mark the first time the Eagles officially suit up on Roos field, starting at 4 p.m. Eastern has 14 total practices this spring, including two scrimmages on April 4 and 11th.
The practice schedule leads up to the Red-White Game on Friday, April 18th at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
EWU's staff has been busy this offseason, completing the 2025 recruiting class at the beginning of February. The team signed 38 new Eagles to boost the roster for the spring and fall.
