Red Turf Takeover draws a crowd for first EWU scrimmage

Eastern Washington’s offense and defense put on a show for the Eagle fans in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash.  — Spokane county's team was out in the community as Eastern Washington football held its first scrimmage of fall camp at the ONE Spokane Stadium. The Eagles' offense and defense faced off in live action in front of over 1300 fans on Thursday night at the Red Turf Takeover.

Eastern's two groups battled for an hour and half, encompassing 14 drives.


Jaxon Branch showed out early with a 35-yard catch from Jared Taylor. Branch finished the night with 70 yards. Taylor put up 148 yards through the air and added 21 on the ground. 


The defense was effective all night and kept the offense out of the endzone. 


Landen Kahai picked off Nate Bell, returning the interception for 33 yards. 


Clayton McCarrell notched a pair of sacks for the scrimmage, with three total tackles. Jaden Radke also recorded a sack, with four total tackles.


In the secondary, Ambrose Marsh was a force, posting two pass breakups and seven total tackles. 


Marcus Lloyd and Bryce Smith tallied five tackles and a pass breakup. Drew Carter finished with five tackles - one for a loss- and Amdane Aboudou had five as well. 


On offense, Kayden Stuit played well out of the tight end spot, racking up catches of 23 and 22 yards. 


In the final drive, freshman kicker Hunter McKee put an exclamation point on the scrimmage with a 56-yard field goal. Soren McKee also converted in the game, connecting from 31 yards. 


Eastern has one more scrimmage in fall camp next Friday (Aug. 22), starting at 3:00. 


The regular season begins on Aug. 30 against No. 5 Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, kicking off at 4 p.m. Pacific Time, 6 p.m. Central. The home opener at Roos Field is on Sep. 20 against Western Illinois, with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
