STANFORD, Calif. — Eastern Washington women's tennis competed at the ITA Northwest Regionals this past weekend in Stanford, Calif. EWU played both doubles and singles matches to continue testing their skills against regional foes. Up and down the roster, the Eagles turned in strong performances and delivered wins against likely opponents.
"We had a good tournament. It's always good to play at this level of competition against some very good players. It's good to see all the D1 teams in the northwest there and see how we compete," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "The best takeaway that I saw is improvement from the first day on Thursday to the final day on Saturday. We built throughout the weekend in match experience through the first few competitions of the season."
In the singles qualifier, Veronika Gayevyk won her round of 64 match against UC Davis' Lyla van Loben Sels. Gayevyk won in three sets (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) to advance. In the round of 32, Gayevyk fell to Oregon's Montserrat Marron Baruqui in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 2-6).
On Saturday (Oct. 10), Aneliss Zamfirescu picked up a win over Van Loben Sels, winning 13-11 in the tiebreaker.
True freshman Noa Ribera picked up a two-set win against Leyanne Hirota from Pacific, earning a 6-4, 6-3 result.
Alena Dziubenko provided another win for the 2026 freshman class, winning 10-7 against Miyu Takiguchi from Pacific in tiebreakers.
Moving to doubles, the Eagles battled on Saturday in the Xtra flight. Olivia Marais and Zoe Pradel won 6-4 over Pacific's Rayna Sugai and Maya Shanok.
Maria Lopez and Gayevyk partnered up to face Seattle U's Kristina Vasileva and Alkesandra Toneva, winning 6-2.
Zamfirescu and Dziubenko then dominated 6-1 over Abi Anderson and Naomi Gracelyn Tio from Portland to make it three doubles wins.
"We're learning a lot, win or lose; it will help us as we continue to progress through some of these tournaments and plan for the January dual match season," Hinson added. "We get a few weeks to kind of work on what we learned, and then be back out at the Gonzaga tournament for the Halloween weekend. It will be nice to see what we've been able to work on from there and then kind of finishing up the fall season."
