CHENEY, Wash. — The first week of classes at Eastern Washington is now complete, and women's tennis also played its first live action of the new year. Eastern played doubles and singles matches against Seattle U on Saturday and Sunday, producing winning results in both.

"It was a really good opening weekend for us. With this showcase, I was very happy with what I saw from the newcomers. It was a first look at them and to see what they have in their tennis game," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "Our returners looked good, in shape, healthy, and ready to compete. I saw positives in both singles and doubles, while there were also elements to build on. Most of all, I like the way we were able to compete as a team overall. We played with a desire to compete and perform well. We need to work a little bit on executing some of the shots that we know we can make. It's about building and working on execution and the point serving return."

Round 1 - Saturday

In the first matchup of the weekend, the Eagles won two doubles matches to start. Aneliss Zamfirescu and Maria Lopez picked up a win at No. 3 (8-6), defeating Maija Tamura and Amina Avdic. Sol Junquera then partnered with Noa Ribera to win at No. 2 (8-6) over Aleksandra Toneva and Kristina Vasileva.

Moving to singles, EWU earned wins at No. 2, 3, 4 and 6. Veronika Gayevyk set the tone during a 6-0, 6-3 win over Daria Nazarenko. 

Olivia Marais won both sets, 6-4, over Toneva, while Junquera beat Avdic 6-1, 6-2 for the team's second and third singles wins. 

Ribera dominated Tamura 6-0 in both sets to hand Eastern the fourth victory. 

Round 2 - Sunday

Starting out on day two, Eastern continued to have success in doubles, winning two matches. Junquera and Ribera controlled an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles for the victory over Zazarenko and Avdic. Gayevyk was joined by Alena Dziubenko at No. 3 doubles, and the two dominated, 8-1, over Vasileva and Tamura.

Zoe Pradel, playing at No. 2 singles, defeated Nazarenko 6-2, 6-2 in her first singles win of the weekend. Zamfirescu cruised to a 6-6, 6-0 victory over Vasileva at the No. 5 singles spot. 

Closing strong for the Eagles, Lopez defeated Tamura in two sets (6-2, 6-1) to give the team its third singles win. 

"One thing I would really like to point out is that the team chemistry is really good, even with three new players," Hinson described. "I like the way that the three freshmen are blending in and mixing with the returners, which is really exciting. I'm looking forward to this team continuing to build this fall."
