Women’s golf and women’s tennis begin postseason play, track and field hits the road for two meets, soccer and volleyball wrap up their spring schedules

CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington athletics' seasons are getting closer to the end, with two teams now in the postseason championships. Women's golf begins its Big Sky Championship competition today in Arizona. Women's tennis will also be in Arizona for the Big Sky Championships, playing its first round match on Thursday against Idaho. Track and field continues to progress through its outdoor season, splitting squads this week between Pullman and Missoula. Both women's soccer and volleyball complete their spring schedules this week. 

Women's Golf – Big Sky Championships (Monday-Wednesday, All Day)

The Eagles are set to travel to Litchfield Park, Arizona, to compete in the three-day Big Sky Championships at Wigwam Golf Course. Representing the team are five athletes: Esha Reddy, Lexie Mahler, Brooke Mahler, Berkley Ledesma, and Spencer Cerenzia.

Women's Tennis - vs. Idaho (Thursday, April 23 at 8 a.m.)

Eastern Washington is going to the Big Sky Championships for the first time since the 2021 season. EWU is the No. 4 seed and will play Idaho, the No. 5 seed, on Thursday at 8 a.m. from Phoenix, Ariz. Eastern completed its regular season this past Saturday against the Vandals and celebrated senior day for Anait Arutiunian, Leandra Nizetic and Sara Vasic. EWU finished the season 5-3 in the Big Sky and 11-8 overall. It's the most conference and overall wins for the team since 2019, when the team was 12-10 and 8-2.

Against Idaho on Saturday, the Eagles made a statement
with a 6-1 victory, sweeping the singles matches. Zoe Pradel cruised to a singles match win at No. 3 in two sets. Arutiunian pushed EWU to a 2-1 advantage after winning the tiebreaker in the second set at the No. 2 singles spot. Nizetic, Marais, and Veronika Gayevyk all delivered match wins that gave Eastern the win over the Vandals. Aneliss Zamfirescu added to the win at No. 6 singles, winning in the third-set tiebreaker. 

In singles this season, Pradel and Marais each have 5 Big Sky wins, while Pradel is tied for the team lead with 11 total wins, and Marais follows with 10. Nizetic also has 11 wins for EWU, going 11-6 overall and 3-5 in conference. The Pradel/Marais duo is 4-3 in Big Sky doubles matches and 7-9 overall. Nizetic, along with Maria Lopez, lead the team with eight overall wins in doubles, while being 3-5 against Big Sky foes. 


Track and Field – at Cougar Classic (Friday, April 24th,  All Day), at Montana Open (Saturday, April 25th, All Day)

The Eagles will split their squads once again this weekend, with the throwers and distance crew traveling to WSU for the Cougar Classic on Friday, April 24, while the jumpers and pole vaulters head to Montana for the Montana Open on Saturday, April 25.

Last weekend, Eastern Washington once again divided its roster and delivered strong performances across both meets, dominating the Whitworth Twilight while the distance crew impressed at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Overall, the Eagles tallied 13 first-place finishes, multiple personal bests, and three additions to the program's all-time top-10 list.


At Whitworth, both the men's and women's teams excelled despite challenging weather conditions. The men secured six event wins, highlighted by victories from Malachi South (400m), Enoch Okoh (200m), Cort Gebbers (discus), Logan Ashbeck (javelin), and Alex Blecha (pole vault). On the women's side, the Eagles added seven wins behind standout performances from Gilana Wollman, who swept the 100m and 200m, Jordyn Grady (100m hurdles), Ashleigh Burke (400m), Melia Middleton (400m hurdles), Charlotte Terry (800m), and Shai Gray (long jump). Grady and Middleton also recorded personal bests while climbing the program's all-time rankings.


In California, the distance group continued to build momentum with several standout performances. Lexi Meyer and Owen Higgins each moved to No. 2 all-time in the 800m, with Meyer finishing just 0.02 seconds shy of the school record. Sara Sanders added a personal best in the 1500m to move into ninth all-time, rounding out a strong showing that featured multiple PRs and season-best marks for the Eagles.


Women's Soccer - vs CBC (Sunday, April 26th at 11 a.m.), Blue Mountain CC (Sunday, April 26th, at 12:30 p.m.)

Eastern Washington soccer caps off their spring season this Sunday, April, 26th at the EWU Soccer Field as they take on CBC at 11 a.m., then Blue Mountain CC at 12:30 p.m.

Women's Volleyball - at Gonzaga (Thursday, April 23 at 6 p.m.)

Eastern Washington volleyball finishes off their spring season this week as they take on Gonzaga on Thursday, April, 23 at 6 p.m.

Football - Scrimmage #2 (Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m.) - Free Admission

EWU will hold its second scrimmage of spring practice on Saturday at Roos Field. The scrimmage will begin at 11 a.m., marking the 12th practice of the spring. The Eagle offense and defense scrimmaged for the first time this past Saturday (April 18), with the defense racking up three interceptions and three sacks. Nate Bell threw two touchdown passes on the offensive side, including a 75-yard touchdown to Jaxon Branch on the opening play.
