CHENEY, Wash. — April is here and Eastern Washington athletics has several teams moving towards the end of their regular seasons. Women's golf travels to Arizona for its second-to-last competition in Maricopa. Track and Field sends its team to Azusa, Calif. for one meet, while keeping another group close to compete in Spokane. Women's tennis plays its final two road conference matches. Women's soccer keeps its spring schedule going with back-to-back home matches on Saturday.
Women's Golf – at Cowgirl Classic (Tuesday-Wednesday, April 7-8, All Day)
Eastern Washington travels to Arizona for the Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Wyoming, from Tuesday to Wednesday this week. The two-day competition will be held at the Ak Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa, Ariz. The field will feature 21 teams, including conference foes Sacramento State and Montana.
Two weeks ago, EWU competed at the Nashville Invitational, hosted by Lipscomb University. The Eagles posted a final score of 924, placing 12th on the team leaderboard.
Berkley Ledesma shot 231 to tie for 40th on the individual leaderboard.
Track and Field – at Bryan Clay Invitational (Thursday-Friday, April 9-10, All Day), at JeffRahn Classic (Friday, April 10, All Day)
Eastern has two meets this week and will split its athletes. Beginning on Thursday, the team's multis will compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. The meet concludes on Friday. The rest of the Eagles will stay close to home and compete at the JeffRahn Classic, hosted by Whitworth.
This will be the second consecutive week EWU splits its squad after competing at the UNLV Rebel Elite and the Whitworth Peace Meet this past weekend. Between the two meets, there were nine new additions or improvements to the EWU All-Time Top Ten lists.
Jordyn Grady posted a lightning 59.16-second time in the 400m hurdles to win the event. Grady's mark moved her to second on the all-time list and ranks second in the Big Sky this season. Lexi Meyer won the 800m in 2:11.52 minutes, the ninth-fastest time in the conference and putting her fourth on the Eastern all-time list. Melia Middleton posted a 56.14 time in the 400m, taking over third in EWU history and 12th in the Big Sky.
Owen Higgins delivered a 1:49.55-minute time in the men's 800m to move to third in program history, while placing second in the event. He also now holds the third-fastest time in the conference this season.
In the field events, Azaria Purdy recorded a 12.36m mark in the women's triple jump, earning her third on the all-time list and second in the Big Sky. Zoe Dunn's 12.14m jump in the triple jump put her fifth on the all-time list and fifth in the conference this season.
Maddy Shekhawat ran the 100m in 13.78 seconds to place second in the event and maintain control over the top spot in the Big Sky. Merci Migani moved into a tie for 10th on the EWU all-time list in the men's triple jump, posting a 13.88m jump that also places him third in the conference. Migani also registered a 7.08m jump in the long jump to slide into 10th in the Big Sky.
Women's Tennis - at Idaho State (Friday, April 10 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time), at Weber State (Sunday, April 12 at 9 a.m. Pacific Time)
EWU starts its final road trip of the regular season on Friday against Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho, before traveling to play Weber State on Sunday in Ogden, Utah. The Eagles' match on Friday starts at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. with the Sunday match beginning at 9 a.m. Down to the final two weekends of the regular season, Eastern is fifth in the Big Sky standings, holding a 3-2 record and 9-7 overall.
This past Saturday, EWU delivered a comeback win, defeating Portland State 4-3 in Portland. Eastern jumped in front 1-0 after winning the doubles point, but the Vikings responded with three-straight singles wins to go up and sit one point away from clinching the match. The Eagles rallied with three straight wins in singles to grab the road win.
Anait Arutiunian earned the clinching win at No. 2 singles over PSU's Marta Giglio.
Leandra Nizetic battled to a three-set win at No. 1 singles, while also winning at No. 3 doubles with
Maria Lopez.
Women's Soccer - vs. Whitworth (Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m.), vs. Spokane Falls CC (Saturday, April 11, 12:30 p.m.) - Free Admission
Eastern hosts two matches at the EWU Soccer Fields on Saturday to continue improving this spring. EWU begins against Whitworth at 11:00 a.m., followed immediately by Spokane Falls CC at 12:30. The games are part of a seven-game schedule the Eagles will play this spring in preparation for the 2026 fall schedule.
