SPOKANE, Wash. – Eastern Washington track and field recorded multiple top-five finishes across meets at the UNLV Rebel Elite and Whitworth Peace Meet.
"Our second outdoor weekend is in the books," said head coach Erin Tucker. "Two weeks ago we dusted off the indoor rust, and this week we shook off the spring break rust. With a split squad, the challenge was simple do we want to be good or great?"
UNLV Rebel Elite
The Eagles saw strong performances led by Lexi Meyer, who won the women's 800 meters (2:11.52), and
Jordyn Grady, who took first in the 400-meter hurdles (59.16).
"We had some great performances, like Jordyn jumping to No. 2 all-time in the 400 hurdles after taking a big spill earlier in the day," Tucker said. "Dust yourself off and keep rolling."
On the men's side, Owen Higgins placed second in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 1:49.55, while
Maddy Shekhawat finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (13.78).
"Coach K has that 800 group rolling right now," Tucker added. "Multiple PRs across the board and big improvements—it was a great weekend for that group."
In the field events, Cort Gebbers won the discus (49.89m).
Merci Migani added a second-place finish in the triple jump and third in the long jump, while
Shai Gray placed fifth in the long jump (6.06m). The men's 4x100 relay also took fourth (40.99).
"Dealing with headwinds and tailwinds made things tougher than expected," Tucker said. "What could have been a great weekend turned into a good one, but the group persevered."
Whitworth Peace Meet
Eastern continued its success with multiple top finishes. Henry Nelson won the men's 800 meters (1:51.60), while
Sara Sanders placed second in both the 800 meters (2:12.31, PB) and the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:55.40).
"Coach E and the vaulters are working hard every day, and you're starting to see those breakthroughs," Tucker said. "It's exciting to see where that group can go this season."
Looking ahead, the focus remains on continued growth for Tucker, "Next up is Whitworth. Some will train, and others will compete but the question stays the same: do we want to be good or great?"
