Matt Ulrich

Career Summary 

Ulrich enters his second season as defensive line coach after joining the staff in March 2022.

Prior to Eastern, he was the co-defensive coordinator at Winona State University (D-II) in Winona, Minn. from 2018-22 after earning his bachelor’s degree in Marketing there in 2011.

In 2021, Ulrich coached Winona State’s No. 17 ranked rushing defense and saw Carter Duxbury earned First Team AP and AFCA All-America status. Under Ulrich’s tutelage, Duxbury also earned to First Team All-Region and NSIC Defensive Player of the Year awards. In 2019, the Warriors were ranked fourth in interceptions. They ranked second in defensive touchdowns in 2018.

Prior to Winona State, Ulrich was the special teams coordinator at Notre Dame College (D-II) in 2016 before taking over co-defensive coordinator duties in 2017. He coached two first team All-MEC honorees, along with a second-team and two honorable mention recipients. He served as a graduate assistant from 2013-14, coaching linebackers and strong safeties while earning his master’s degree.

Ulrich had a standout playing career at Winona State from 2007-11, earning All-America honors as a defensive tackle in 2011. A four-year starter, he was a three-time All-NSIC performer (two as First Team) and was the conference’s preseason Defensive Player of the Year in 2010. During his career, he recorded 7 sacks and 112 tackles. He participated in the Minnesota Vikings’ Rookie Camp in 2012.
