2010: Listed as a starter at“boundary” cornerback on EWU’s preseason depthchart. In the spring, he was presented an “Iron Eagle”Award for his off-season academic and athletic achievements.
2009: He played in nine games, starting two, asan injury spoiled a promising start to the season. He had 10tackles versus Western Oregon (9/5/09) in his first-ever start asan Eagle cornerback after playing previously at EWU as a safety(2008) and running back (2006). He had four tackles in his nextstart against California (9/12/09), but suffered a high ankle/kneesprain during EWU’s practice the day before the NorthernColorado (9/19/09) game. He missed EWU’s next three gamesbefore returning to play sparingly against Weber State (10/10/09).He had eight tackles versus Northern Arizona (11/21/09) inEWU’s playoff-clinching victory over the Lumberjacks. Heended the year with his first career interception versus Stephen F.Austin (11/28/09) in the FCS Playoffs.
2008: Did not start, but played in all 11Eastern games. He had a season-high four tackles versus PortlandState (11/4/08).
2007: Redshirted after suffering aseason-ending elbow injury in Eastern’s season-opener againstMontana-Western (8/31/07). Moved from running back to safety in thefall after Gregor Smith was lost for the season with a shoulderinjury.
2006: Played as a true freshman, finishing asthe team’s third-leading rusher with 234 yards. He had theteam’s top performance of the year with 124 yards and atouchdown in EWU’s 34-0 win over Northern Colorado(10/14/06). He was the team’s special teams player of theweek against Portland State (10/21/06).
HS: Graduated from Shorecrest HS in 2006. Wasone of five finalists for the Seattle Times High SchoolAthlete of the Year. Earned first team 3A All-State honors as arunning back from Associated Press as selected by sportswriters andbroadcasters. He was also on the Seattle Times All-Stateteam after rushing for a state-leading (all classifications) 2,222yards and 37 total touchdowns. In addition, WashingtonPreps.comselected him to its 3A All-State first team as both a running backand defensive back. Selected to play in the 4A/3A East-WestAll-State Game. Named by the Seattle Times as a “RedChip” selection as one of the top 29 recruits in the state ofWashington. The Seattle Times selected him to its“Star Times” All-Area first team as a running back.Also, he was a first team All-WesCo South Division selection asboth a running back and defensive back. Besides his 2,000 yards onoffense, he finished his senior season with 56 tackles and fiveinterceptions. He also had 211 yards from receptions and 181 yardson returns. He helped lead Shorecrest to a 10-2 record and itsfirst State 3A playoff berth since 1994. He had a school-record 397yards and seven touchdowns in a winner-to-state game, a 57-56victory over Lynden. He also blocked an extra point and a fieldgoal, and forced a fumble. He broke the school’s single gamerushing record three times and twice scored seven touchdowns. As asafety and cornerback he had 56 tackles and five interceptions. Hehad 288 yards and seven touchdowns in the first three quarters inwhat appeared to be a runaway victory over Mariner. But whenMariner scored 33 points in the fourth quarter, Hoffman re-enteredthe game and recovered an onside kick to preserve the 69-60 win.Also played basketball, averaging seven points as a senior aftermissing his junior season with a shoulder injury. In track, he ranthe second leg of the State 3A championship 4x100 relay team,and the anchor leg of the winning 4x400 relay. Both winning times– 42.64 and 3:21.14, respectively – were schoolrecords. He was also ninth in the long jump and competed at Statein the 100.
Personal: Born 1/18/88 in Fountain Valley,Calif. His older brother Shane Hoffman also signed with the Eaglesas a junior college transfer out of Orange Coast College inCalifornia. The brothers signed their letters of intent onJesse’s 18th birthday, and Shane lettered in 2008 as areserve receiver and special teams player. Jesse loves to write,mostly short stories. Mechanical engineering technology major.
