Women's Tennis Begins Dual Matches Against Washington And Seattle This Weekend

Cheney, Wash. - The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team returns to action in the new year, with the start of non-conference dual matches. They begin the schedule traveling to Seattle, Wash. for two matches in as many days. The Eagles go up against Washington on Saturday, Jan. 9, and then continue play on Sunday, Jan. 10 against Seattle. The matches will start at 9 a.m. PST and 10:30 a.m. PST, respectively.

Eastern concluded its fall season at the Bulldog Classic on Nov. 8, and gained some valuable experience for the bulk of the season. Sophomore Janaya Smith was the top performer, beating four opponents before reaching the championship round in the blue singles flight. She would eventually fall to Gonzaga's Sophie Whittle in a three-set match, but it marked the more dominant performance for EWU in the early season. In the singles red flight, freshman Faye Worrall, and junior Erin Blessing both reached the semifinals with dominant wins, before their runs came to an end.

The Eagles also participated in the ITA Regionals, facing high levels of competition from the Pac-12 and other western conferences. The team tallied some first round wins in both singles and doubles, as well as numerous victories in the back draws.

The Huskies concluded their fall season at the Jack Kramer Invitational, where freshman Stacey Fung reached the finals before falling to Maiar Ahmed of Fresno State. Fung was a top performer for UW during tournament play, finishing with a 10-2 singles record, and a 7-2 doubles record.

Seattle finished their fall campaign at the Bulldog Classic as well, reaching the semifinals with the doubles team of Michelle Lui, last year's Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, and Kellie Woodman. In the singles portion, Kailyn Skjonsby reached the quarterfinals.
