Boulder City, Nev. - The Eastern Washington University women's golf team finished the second day of the Big Sky Championship with its best single-round performance of the season Tuesday, April 19, headlined by a top-five performance from senior Marissa Borja and a hole-in-one from junior Hannah Kim.
After shooting 307 in the first round at the Boulder Creek Golf Club, Eastern finished the second round with a total of 295, nine strokes better than its previous season-best. EWU's two-day total sits at 602.
With her best 18-hole performance of the year, Borja led the team with a score of 70, two-under par. Her second round was good enough to jump her into a tie for fourth place in the 60-player field.
Freshman Mercedes Khumnark followed up her stellar play on the first day, finishing with another round of 73, good for a share of 11th place. Sophomore Kimberlie Miyamoto made big improvements in the second round, shooting a 73, her best mark on the season. She is tied for 37th place. Junior Hannah Kim shot a 79, with the highlight of the day coming on the 12th hole, when she sunk a hole-in-one. She is in a tie for 45th.
"Today was an amazing day. Even though we remain in 8th place, we shot the best round in at least 7 or 8 years. Marissa played amazing and she's so much fun to watch when she's in that mode. We saw another great round out of Mercedes, and after a rough day yesterday Kimberlie came back with a 73. Unfortunately we don't get to play defense out there. Credit to our conference today and how far it has come in the last few years. As a whole, each team went out and played outstanding," said head coach Brenda Howe.
The Eagles remain in eighth place heading into the third and final day. Idaho (581) made the leap into first place, tying a Big Sky Championship single-round record at 286. Eastern sits just one stroke behind Northern Colorado in seventh, and six strokes behind Weber State (596) in sixth.
The final round begins tomorrow, Wednesday, April 19.
