Spokane, Wash. -- Friday's Eastern Washington University women's soccer team's match was called in the 61st minute due to inclement weather. The Eagles were holding onto a 2-1 lead over Gonzaga until heavy rain and lightning forced a delay that lasted 40 minutes, and the match was ruled a no-contest.
Eastern got on the board first with a goal in the third minute from Allison Raniere. It wouldn't take long for the Bulldogs to find the equalizer, as GU's Karley Baggerly scored in the seventh minute. Eastern went up 2-1 in the 16th minute off a Jenny Chavez header that was played to her off a corner kick from reigning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week, Aimie Inthoulay.
"I'm extremely proud of our kids tonight," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "They fought hard and played well for a large chunk of the time we were out there. Credit Gonzaga, as I thought it was an entertaining game for fans to watch. We can't control the weather and for the players safety we made the right choice (of calling tonight's game). We'll keep improving and moving forward, but I'm really proud of our kids tonight."
Due to the no-contest ruling, all stats recorded in the match will be voided. All teams keep their pre-match record intact.
Eastern Washington continues its road trip with a match against Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, September 9, starting at 7 p.m. PST.
