Eagle Women's Basketball to Face Air Force on Tuesday

Both squads are still in the hunt for their first victories of the season

WATCH | LIVE STATS | WEEK TWO GAME NOTES

CHENEY, Wash. –
The second game of the year is on tap for the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team, who is prepping to travel to Air Force for a midweek matchup. The Eagles face the Falcons on Tuesday evening, with tip-off set for 6 p.m. Pacific time.

The Eagles look to bounce back from a season-opening 81-56 loss at Fresno State on Nov. 10. Air Force, who fell to Denver by a score of 75-54, are also seeking their first win of the season.

LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Washington officially opened the 2017-18 campaign on Friday at Fresno State. Delaney Hodgins led all scorers on the night to move to fourth-place on Eastern's all-time career scoring list with 1,456 points. She also added 10 rebounds for a double-double and a career-high seven steals to go along with a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

The Eagles were able to force 20 Bulldog turnovers and out-rebounded Fresno State 41-31. However, EWU was only 2-18 from three-point range and were held to just 33.3% from the field while Fresno State shot 52.5%. EWU picked up the pace in the fourth quarter and shot 41.2% from field-goal range and held the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 4:26, but the late rally would fall short as the Eagles lost 81-56.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS: Air Force also opened its season 0-1 after falling to Denver 75-54 at home. Freshman Kaelin Immel led the team with nine points.

The Falcons return four starters from a year ago, including Cortney Porter who averaged 8.6 points per game during the 2016-17 season. AF looks to rebound from a season that saw them go 4-25 overall with a 2-16 mark in Mountain West play under third year head coach Chris Gobrecht. They welcome 10 newcomers to this year's squad.

SERIES HISTORY: The Eagles were slated to travel to Air Force early last season, but inclement weather cancelled the game. The two teams have met once on Nov. 15, 2015 in Cheney where Eastern won 65-44.

HODGINS SOARS TO THE TOP: On Friday, Nov. 10, Delaney Hodgins put up 28 points, just one shy of her career high of 29, to move to fourth-place on Eastern Washington's all-time career scoring list with 1,456 points. She passes Brianne Ryan (2009-12) who totaled 1,451 points. Hodgins is now just 11 points out of third place and just 410 away from breaking the all-time record of 1,865 set by her older sister Hayley Hodgins (2013-16).

UP AHEAD: After Tuesday's matchup, the Eagles open the home slate against BYU on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6:05 p.m. They then travel to Eugene for a contest against Oregon on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

MEET THE NEWCOMERS: During the offseason, the Eagles added freshmen Cailyn Francis (6-3, C, Yuba City, Calif.), Lily Perkins (5-11, F, West Covina, Calif.) Brittany Klaman (5-11, G, Melbourne, Australia), and Lea Wolff (5-7, G, Leverkusen, Germany) to the squad.

In Eastern's season opener, Klaman saw 18 minutes off the men and was 1-7 with three points, including an assist and a block. Wolff saw 23 minutes and grabbed three defensive boards and three steals. Perkins and Francis also scored their first points as Eagles.

RETURNING EAGLES: Although the Eagles lost Tisha Phillips and Ashli Payne, who averaged 14.0 and 12.3 points per contest last year, respectively, to graduation, the EWU roster is full of talent ready to step up and take their place.

Eastern's roster is comprised of two seniors in Hodgins and Mariah Cunningham. Amira Chandler, Violet Kapri Morrow and Alissa Sealby make up the junior class, while Andie Easley, Uriah Howard, Baylee Rexing and Symone Starks round out the sophomore class. After a knee injury six games into the season, Amy Hartleroad returns as a redshirt freshmen.

In addition to Hodgins, 2016-17 starters Morrow and Sealby return for Eastern. Morrow, a junior, ranked fourth on the team in both points per game (7.6) and rebounds per game (3.6) last season.

As a freshman, Starks averaged 4.8 points per game last season and ranked third on the team with 2.3 assists per contest. She also averaged 2.4 steals to lead the Eagles. Cunningham returns for her senior season, along with Howard, who both made impacts for EWU off of the bench last year.

THE SCHEDULE: Eastern plays 30 regular season games, 14 of which will be contested at home on Reese Court. The nonconference portion of the schedule consists of 12 games, including matchups against several Power 5 conference opponents. The first road trip of the year and the regular season kicks off at Fresno State (Nov. 10) and Air Force (Nov. 14). Eastern returns home to play host to BYU on Nov. 17. The always rigorous 18-game Big Sky Conference slate begins on Dec. 28 against Northern Colorado, who posted a 22-8 overall record a season ago.
