The Eastern Washington University's women's tennis team did not travel far to play their opponent this Friday, who was Gonzaga University. The Eagles ended up falling to the Bulldogs 7-0 in the matchup.
"Credit to Gonzaga today," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "They have a great team and they played very well. I had two challenges for the team today: to play with great energy and to play hungry. They all stepped up and met those challenges. We didn't get the results we wanted but each and every athlete played with great energy and played with the hunger and desire to do well."
In the No. 1 singles spot, sophomore Faye Worrall fell to ranked Sophie Whittle by scores of 6-1, 6-3. Whittle is currently ranked No. 8 in the Northwest Region.
Senior Erin Blessing competed in the No. 2 singles spot and fell to her opponent Nevada Apollo 6-1, 6-2. Senior Carolina Lopez was in the No. 3 spot and fell 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Marta Heinen competed against Graciela Rosas in the No. 4 spot and fell 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Katrina Domingo played Kate Kethels in the No. 5 spot and fell 6-2 in both sets. Freshman Valentina Sottile finished off the singles competition in the No. 6 spot, falling 6-3, 6-0 to Domonique Garley.
In doubles action, Blessing and Worrall teamed up to compete against Whittle and Ketels and fell 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles spot. Domingo and Sottile had a close match in the No. 2 doubles spot before falling 6-4 to their opponents Apollo and Garley. Heinen and Lopez finished up the doubles play, falling 6-0 in the No. 3 spot to Bourguignon and Rosas.
"I am proud of this team and their desire to continue working hard while playing some really tough teams," Hinson said. "We are motivated to do well and that's the kind of fire I want to continue seeing. We battled really well in our No. 2 doubles match today. Katrina and Valentina are communicating well and are figuring out how to work well as a team."
The Eagles will continue competition this weekend, playing Seattle University in Cheney for their home opener on Feb 12. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. in the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse this Sunday.
"We are ready to get back to work for our home opener against Seattle on Sunday," Hinson added.
