Fresno State Defeats EWU Women’s Tennis 6-1

With this loss, the Eagles go 1-1 this weekend playing at home

CHENEY, Wash -- Eastern Washington University women's tennis fell 6-1 to Fresno State today (Feb. 26) in a non-conference match up. After this weekend's competition, the Eagles are now 1-1 in the Big Sky and 1-8 overall.

"We finished off a good weekend of matches today," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "Fresno State is a tough team but we really held our own and came out strong to get the doubles point. Our doubles play has really improved. It's been a point of emphasis in our training sessions so that work has really paid dividends in recent matches."

The Eagles started off the match with collecting the majority of wins in the doubles spots, giving them the 1-0 lead going into singles action for the second match in a row.

"I'm hoping we can gain confidence moving forward because we've proven that we can get that doubles point and the momentum moving into singles play," Hinson added.

Sophomore Faye Worrall competed in the No. 1 singles spot and fell to her opponent Katerina Stloukalova 6-1 in both sets. Senior Erin Blessing had a battle again in the No. 2 singles spot, but eventually lost to her opponent Galina Bykova 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

In the third spot, junior Rachel Swindell had a close first set against her opponent Emma Wilson, but overall fell 6-4, 6-0 in the matchup. Senior Katrina Domingo was in the fourth spot and fell 6-0 in both sets to Juliane Triebe.

Senior Carolina Lopez competed in the fifth spot against Georgia Lawson and fell 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Marta Heinen finished off the singles competition against Oliva Noble. The freshman ended up falling 6-2, 6-4 in the closing match.

"We had some strong singles play from Erin, Rachel and Marta and we had very competitive points in all of our singles matches," Hinson said. "Credit to Fresno State for playing some impressive singles today. Overall I'm just extremely pleased with what we were able to accomplish this weekend. The cohesiveness of this group of athletes is just continuing to build and they are playing for more than just themselves."

On the doubles side, the Eagles had clear success throughout the stretch. Blessing and Worrall teamed up in the first spot and won 6-4 against their opponents. In the second spot, Heinen and Swindell fell to their opponents by a score of 6-0. Finishing off doubles was Domingo and freshman Valentina Sottile. They won their match by a close margin by a score of 7-6.

"They are working hard and fighting for each other and for what it means to be an Eagle," Hinson said. "We have high ambitions for the rest of the season and will undoubtedly aim to build upon what we accomplished this weekend."

The Eagles will continue home competition this Friday, March 3 by playing their rescheduled match against Lewis-Clark State. Matches will begin at 5 p.m. in the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse. Admission is free and open to the public.
