Women's Tennis Fights a Tough Battle Against Weber State

The Eagles lose 5-2 on the road and will return to Cheney to close out the regular season next weekend

The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team lost 5-2 in Ogden, Utah today (April 16). Their record is now 3-6 in the conference and 5-13 overall.

"It is a bummer for the girls," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "They wanted it so bad and fought so hard. We just couldn't execute often enough in singles when we needed to. They left it all on the court and played great doubles. I am proud of all the intangibles this team brings -- cohesiveness, team spirit, desire to work hard, positive attitude, etc. It is frustrating because I want them to have success and to be rewarded for those things. I have no doubt they will continue to fight and scrap for everything through the rest of the season."

In the loss, two of the three doubles teams for EWU dominated and was able to get the doubles point in the match. In the No. 2 spot, senior Erin Blessing and junior Rachel Swindell won 6-1 against their oponents. In the No. 3 spot, senior Katrina Domingo and freshman Valentina Sottile won 6-3. In the No. 1 spot was junior Janaya Smith and sophomore Faye Worrall but the match went unfinished.

On the singles side of play, Swindell was able to win in the No. 4 spot against her opponent. She won her first set 7-6 (7-4), but lost her second set 2-6. She came back and rallied for the win as she won 7-5 in the last set.

The rest of the Eagles fought hard but were not able to earn another win in the competition. In the No. 1 spot, Smith lost 6-4, 7-5. In the second spot, Worrall fell 6-3, 6-0. Blessing had a battle in the No. 3 spot as she lost in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 0-6). Sottile fell 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot and freshman Marta Heinen rounded off the singles as she fell 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot.

Eastern will close out the regular season at home next weekend. The first match will take place on Friday, April 21 against Montana State with matches beginning at 3 p.m. The second match will be on Sunday, April 23 against Montana with matches at 10 a.m. All matches are free and open to the general public.
