Women's Tennis

Women's Tennis Falls to Sacramento State 6-1

Eastern was able to win every double match, but was not able to come out on top in the Big Sky competition

The Eastern Washington University's women's tennis team fell to Big Sky's Sacramento State by a team score of 6-1 today, April 2. With this loss, the Eagles drop to a 2-5 conference record and remains in eighth place in the standings.

"We came out on fire in doubles today," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "It was some of the best doubles performances I have seen in my time here at Eastern -- top to bottom. I thought our singles play was better than the last couple of matches. We worked on playing more free and with less fear. Our mindset was to just let it flow. I thought we were more aggressive and i think that will help us moving forward. I definitely saw improvements today bu not enough to come out on top as a team."

Eastern was able to collect wins in all three doubles matches, but was not able to earn a win in the singles part of the competition.

In the No. 1 doubles spot was junior Janaya Smith and sophomore Faye Worrall. The team was able to defeat their opponents by a score of 6-4. In the second spot was senior Erin Blessing and junior Rachel Swindell also defeating their opponents by a score of 6-4. Finishing off doubles was senior Katrina Domingo and freshman Valentina Sottile where they won in a dominant 6-0 fashion.

In the No. 1 singles spot was Smith, where she lost to her opponent by scores of 6-2, 6-3. Worrall competed in the No. 2 spot, losing a close 7-5, 6-3 match. Blessing competed in the No. 3 spot and lost by scores of 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 4 spot was Swindell, where she lost 6-2 in both of the sets.

Both freshmen were able to take their matches to three sets before falling to their opponents. Sottile won her first set by a score of 7-5, but ended up losing the next set 6-4 and the tiebreaker for the third set, 10-6. Freshman Marta Heinen won her first set 6-3, but lost her next two sets by scores of 6-3, 6-2.

The Eagles will continue competition on April 15 at Idaho State. Matches will begin at 10 a.m.
