Women's Tennis Falls in a Close Match Against Montana State

The Eagles fall 4-3 to the second place Bobcats in the Big Sky match-up

The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team lost in a close fashion to second place Montana State today (April 21). The Bobcats edged the Eagles 4-3 in the home match. Eastern drops to 3-7 while Montana improves to 9-1. The Eagles will need to defeat Montana in their next match on Sunday (April 23) to have a chance to get into the Big Sky Conference championship still. Results around the league will finalize who gets into the tournament at the end of the weekend.

"Today I saw better performances in singles," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "We had the grit out there and I believe we approached the match very smart tactically. We had three singles matches to to three sets. That shows me heart and determination and the sheer desire to do what it takes to be our best. It is these kind of matches that show how tough this conference is top to bottom. It gives us confidence that we are doing the right things to get better on a daily basis."

In singles, three EWU athletes were able to collect wins. In the No. 3 spot, senior Erin Blessing defeated her opponent in a hard fought three-set battle. In the first set, she won 6-2 and lost her second set 1-6. In the final set, she won 7-5. In the No. 4 spot, junior Rachel Swindell won in a tiebreaker for the third set. Swindell lost her first set 3-6, but came back and won the second set 6-4. In the tiebreaker, she won 10-3. The other Eagle to earn a victory was freshman Valentina Sottile. She also lost her first set 3-6, and came back to win the next two sets by the same score of 6-3.

The other three single players fought hard but were not able to come out on top. In the No. 1 spot, junior Janaya Smith lost 6-2, 6-1. In the second spot, sophomore Faye Worrall lost 6-3, 6-4. Finishing off the singles action was freshman Marta Heinen who fell 6-1, 6-2.

"There was great effort and energy on the other singles courts today, but we couldn't come out on top," Hinson added.

In doubles, the Bobcats took control and defeated the No. 1 doubles team of Smith and Worrall 6-3 along with the No. 3 team of senior Katrina Domingo and Sotile 6-2. In the No. 2 spot with Swindell and Blessing, the match went unfinished at 4-4.

The Eagles will continue competition this Sunday on April 23 for Senior Day. The three seniors being honored are Blessing, Domingo and Carolina Lopez. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. with free admission to the general public.

"We are ready for the Montana match on Sunday," Hinson said. "It is senior day, which is always fun and exciting for all our players and the friends and families that get to be there."
