The Eastern Washington University track and field teams continued their success in the second indoor meet of the year at the Vandal Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 12-13).
The women swept both the University of Idaho (51-18) and Portland State University (51-34) in team scores.
The men earned a victory against PSU (39-13) and fell to Idaho (55-39) in team scores.
"What a great meet for the Eastern women," women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg said. "We had some tremendous performances for the beginning of the season from both veterans and freshmen. The Vandal Indoor Invitational provided the whole team with some exciting moments. Â It was a great first meet back from the break."
"Today was a good day for the Eagles," men's head coach Stan Kerr said. "I felt the team performed well today coming off the long holiday break. We have a strong team that loves to train hard and are now starting to see the benefits of those training efforts."
Women's Top Performers
In field events, junior Madison Doepker took first in the weight throw with a toss of 52-3 1/4. Sophomore Samantha Boudreau continued the success in throws with a title in the shot put and a throw of 40-9 3/4.
In the pole vault, junior Samantha Raines took first with a clearance of 11-11 1/4. Senior Maegan McCurdy also moved to second on the all-time list with a long jump mark of 19-4, earning third at the meet.
In the running events, freshman Kaitlin Gibb took first in the 60-meter hurdles by finishing in 8.95 seconds, putting her in second of all-time. Freshman Alexis Rolan also took first place in the 60-meter run with a time of 7.62 seconds, putting her in third on the all-time list.
Senior Leanne Asper finished the 800 in 2:12.49 to take first as well. The mark was just .01 second off from claiming the school record of 2:12.48 set by Caitlin Prunty in 2005.
Men's Top Performers
The men took the top four spots in the long jump, led by sophomore Keshun McGee with a mark of 23-11 1/2. McGee went on to take another title in the triple jump with a leap of 49-9 1/4.
Senior Larry Still claimed the pole vault title with a clearance of 16-6 3/4. Junior Aaron Pullin was right behind him in the event with a 15-3 mark.
More comments from head coach Stan Kerr . . .
On individuals: "Keshun McGee and Larry Still showed they are ready for a solid indoor season with their strong early season performances today. Logan Stahl and Brock O'Neal also showed their readiness for a competitive indoor campaign."
Â
More comments from head coach Marcia Mecklenburg . . .
On individuals: "The top running event mark on the women's side goes to Leanne Asper who ran a gutsy 800. That time was just .01 of a second off the school record. Maegan McCurdy had the field event mark of the meet in the long jump.  That leap moved her to number two all time for EWU. In her first race back from cross country season, Carli Corpus ran a never-say-die 3000, maintaining contact with the lead runner and almost out sprinting her at the finish."
Â
On sprinters and jumpers: "I expected the short sprinters and jumpers to do well and they did not disappoint. We went 1-2 in the 60 with freshman Alexis Rolan winning it and senior Rebecca Tarbert finishing second. Another freshman, Kaitlin Gibb won the 60-hurdles moving straight to number two all time for EWU. Â I need to give a shout out to Samantha Raines, who won the pole vault with a solid mark."
Â
On throwers: "Our women's weight throwers went 1, 2 ,3 with Madison Doepker winning the event and Justean Landis and Samantha Lester placing second and third, respectively. I liked our depth in that event. Samantha Boudreau won the shot giving Eastern a sweep in the women's throws."
