Big Sky Play Begins for Women’s Basketball on Saturday

The Eagles take on Weber State (Dec. 29) and Idaho State (Dec. 31) as the six-game road swing continues

CHENEY, Wash. – After a holiday hiatus following the conclusion of non-conference play, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team is back in action. The Eagles are eager to begin Big Sky Conference play on Saturday, Dec. 29 at Weber State for a 1 p.m. Pacific time tip, followed by a contest at Idaho State on Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. PT.

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: Eastern Washington looks for a fresh start in conference play as they wrapped up non-conference play with a 1-8 record. Eastern's lone win came on Nov. 14 against Eastern Oregon.
 
The Eagles are led by Violet Kapri Morrow who averages 17.0 points per game which is fourth in the Big Sky and 101st in the nation. Morrow is also the most active Eagle on the boards with 6.6 per contest.
 
Freshmen Grace Kirscher and Jessica McDowell-White average 9.2 and 9.0 points per game, respectively. McDowell-White has hit at least one three-pointer in each game this season, averaging 2.4 per contest which is fifth in the Big Sky. She leads the team with 22 makes on the year with an accuracy of 36.1 percent. The duo also lead the Eagles in steals with 1.2 per game while McDowell-White leads the team with an average of 2.4 per contest.
 
Senior Alissa Sealby leads Eastern with 1.1 blocks per game which is the sixth-best in the Big Sky. Freshman Bella Cravens is close behind with 0.9 swats per game which is ninth.
 
As a team, the Eagles average 54.6 points per game and are shooting 34.9 percent from the field. They rank 93rd in the nation with 7.0 three-pointers per game which is also third in the conference. They are fifth in the Big Sky in blocked shots per game (3.2) and fourth in steals per game (7.4).
 
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Washington wrapped up the non-conference season by escaping the cold of Cheney at the Maui Invitational on Dec. 14-15. The Eagles took on No. 8 Oregon State and although they were tied at the end of the first quarter, Eastern dropped a 93-45 decision.
 
For the second time in her career, Grace Kirscher led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points. The freshman made 7-of-11 from the field including 3-for-5 from three-point range. Alissa Sealby followed with eight points and led the team with five rebounds.
 
Uriah Howard also grabbed five boards and added six points. Freshman Bella Cravens, in her home state of Hawaii, set a new career-high of six points in her first career start. Cravens also recorded the only block for the Eagles. Brittany Klaman led the team with three assists and two steals.
 
The following day, Eastern fell to UC Riverside by a score of 57-45. Jessica McDowell-White led the team in scoring with 13 points. The freshman made four three-pointers and also led the team with three assists.
 
Alissa Sealby was the other Eagle in double figures, tying her career-high of 11 points for the second time this season. Sealby led the team with seven rebounds along with Uriah Howard who also had seven boards and three steals to lead the team.
 
A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS: Weber State wrapped up the non-conference season with a 3-7 overall record and sit just above EWU in the Big Sky standings in 10th place. Ironically, the Wildcats also wrapped up their non-conference slate against UC Riverside, falling 71-39. WSU is riding a four-game losing streak with their most recent win coming at home against UTEP on Nov. 28.
 
Weber State is led by a trio of Wildcats who average double figures in Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman (16.3), Kayla Watkins (13.0) and Emily Drake (11.5). Dominique Williams leads the Wildcats with 8.8 boards per contest and Welch-Coleman ranks 27th nationally with 5.7 assists per game.
 
The Wildcats average 61.4 points per game and allow their opponents to score 67.0. Additionally, they are shooting 36.8 percent from the field.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Although Eastern trails the all-time series, 33-43, they have won three-straight including nine out of the last 10 meetings. Head coach Wendy Schuller is 20-16 all-time against the Wildcats. In Ogden, the Eagles trail the series 11-26.
 
The two squads met once last season in Cheney where Eastern picked up a 77-68 victory. Violet Kapri Morrow scored 23 points and had eight rebounds, followed by Brittany Klaman who had seven points with six boards to go with four assists.
 
A LOOK AT THE BENGALS: Idaho State is 5-4 overall and are riding a three-game win streak heading into Big Sky play. The 5-4 mark is currently second in the Big Sky and the Bengals will welcome Idaho (3-6) to town on Dec. 29 before playing Eastern.
 
The Bengals have three players that average double figures in Saylair Grandson (12.4), Grace Kenyon (12.2) and Estefania Ors (11.5). Kenyon also leads ISU with 5.6 rebounds per game while Grandson paces the Bengals with 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals.
 
As a team, Idaho State averages 63.7 points per game on 43.4 percent shooting.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Eastern leads the all-time series over Idaho State, 38-34 and have picked up wins in the last three meetings, including seven of the last 10. In Pocatello, the Eagles are just 14-20 all-time.
 
The Eagles and the Bengals met once last season in Cheney for Senior Day where Eastern picked up a come-from-behind 68-64 victory. EWU used a 22-4 fourth quarter run to top Idaho State after being down 60-44 with 7:37 remaining. Brittany Klaman led the team with a career-high 17 points after making five three-point field goals and Alissa Sealby added 10 points.  
 
KAPRI'S QUEST TO 1,000: Senior Violet Kapri Morrow is on the road to joining one of the most exclusive clubs in college basketball, the 1,000-point club. With 919 career points Morrow needs just 81 more to become the 18th player in Eastern Washington women's basketball history to eclipse 1,000 points.
 
Morrow is currently 24th on Eastern's all-time scoring list. She needs 17 more points to pass Tatjana Sparavalo (2008-11) for 23rd all-time with 936 points.
