SPOKANE, Wash. –
The Eastern Washington women's tennis team fell to Gonzaga today (Feb. 18) 0-7 and are now 3-3 overall. Gonzaga is 7-2 overall.

"This was really a great match today," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "We brought such a competitive spirit to the court and were able to trust the process and focus on being our best from start to finish. Credit to Gonzaga for stepping up in close situations to come out on top."

Janaya Smith and Rylee Braeden started out in the No. 1 doubles spot against Sophie Whittle, who is ranked No. 24 in the nation, and Graciela Rosas but fell 1-6. Faye Worrall and Zoey Nelson followed in the No. 2 spot and lost 3-6 to give Gonzaga the doubles point. Rachel Swindell and Stephanie Broussard competed in the No. 3 spot and the match went unfinished at 3-4.

Smith opened up singles play in a tough fought three-set match but couldn't come away with the victory at 2-6, 7-6, 0-1 with a 2-10 tiebreaker. In the No. 2 spot, Braeden won the first set but couldn't come away with the match point overall (6-4, 1-6, 2-6), followed by Nelson who lost (5-7, 4-6) as well as Worrall who fell 6-7 (4-7), 2-6. Broussard (3-6, 2-6) and Swindell (1-6, 2-6) finished out singles play to end the overall match.

Hinson looks at the match as an opportunity for growth, "We are really enjoying the competition of these matches and we are looking forward to more tough competition next week."

The Eagles squad is done for the weekend and will take the week to prepare for their matches against Minnesota (Feb. 23) and Washington State (Feb. 24) in Pullman, Wash. next weekend.
