FULL RESULTS

CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team is 6-6 overall and 3-1 in conference after defeating Idaho State 4-3 today (Mar. 19) at home.

"This was a great team win today," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "I'm really proud of how well we fought to come out on top."

The Eagles secured the doubles point with two straight wins. Janaya Smith and Rylee Braeden teamed up on the first court to come out with the 6-1 win. Zoey Nelson and Faye Worrall worked together in the No. 2 spot and went 5-3 but the match was left unfinished as Stephanie Broussard and Valentina Sottile clinched the win at No. 3, 6-3.

"Our intensity was really good in doubles and that allowed us to get that crucial doubles point early in the team match," said Hinson.

The Eagles won three matches overall in singles play. Smith opened it up on the first court and won in two swift sets (6-0, 6-3), followed by Nelson who won 7-6 (2), 6-3. In the No. 3 spot, Braeden fell 3-6, 5-7 as well as Faye Worrall at No. 5 who fell 1-6, 4-6. Broussard defeated her opponent in two sets (6-2, 6-4) to clinch the team victory and Jennifer Lewis ended the day with a hard fought three-set match but lost 1-6, 6-4, 4-10.

"Singles was an all-out battle and both sides were fighting back and forth," said Hinson. "In the end we were able to get three big wins to clinch the match. Credit to Smith, Nelson and Broussard for finding a way to come out on top and the whole team for bringing the kind of support it takes to win."

The Eagles will travel to California next week to face Cal Poly (Mar. 26), Fresno State (Mar. 28) and Sacramento State (Mar. 30) for non-conference play.
