Eagles Soar at Multiple Competitions Over The Weekend

Eastern takes home seven first-place titles at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula, Mont.

The Eastern Washington University track and field team was represented at three different track meets this weekend with senior Kari Hamilton finishing third in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 34:55.83 at the Stanford Invitational/San Francisco Distance Carnival. The time puts her third on EWU's all-time list behind Kari McKay's time of 33:46.1 from 1992. Senior Leanne Asper also took second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.56 at the same meet.

Freshman Alexis Rolan made a mark at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, in the 100 meters during the preliminary round with a finishing time of 11.65. This mark puts her second of all-time in EWU history behind Joyce Rainwater's time of 11.55 from 1995. The time put her 22nd overall, which did not qualify for the finals.

On the men's side, junior Larry Still finished sixth in his section of the pole vault with a clearance of 16-4 3/4 at the Texas Relays.

The Eagles also competed at the Al Manuel in Missoula, Mont., against Idaho, Portland State, Montana and Montana State with multiple first-place finishes on both the men's and women's sides.

"The Al Manuel ended up as a double competition meet, one against competitors and one against the conditions," women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg said. "The cold temperatures and wind were a definite test in courage, but even given the weather, we had some great performances."

"The team responded to the very cold and dry weather today with tip-top attitudes and several strong performances," men's head coach Stan Kerr said. "It felt like one of those days that you knew would require you to believe that you can it."

Women's Top Performers
Senior Rebecca Tarbert was the other Eagle on the women's side to compete in the Texas Relays, finishing 58th in the 100 meters preliminary round with a time of 11.98.

Senior Paula Gil-Echevarria also competed in the Stanford/San Francisco Distance Carnival by finishing 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:03.77.

In Missoula, the women collected a first-place title from senior Sam Lester in the hammer with a mark of 173-2. Senior Erin Clark also earned a title in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-9 3/4. The other Eagle to take first was Samantha Boudreau in the shot put with a mark of 43-3 3/4.

Men's Top Performers
At the Texas Relays, senior Scott Miller finished ninth in his section of the discus with a mark of 163-5. Junior Parker Bowden took 11th in the preliminary round of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.74. Senior Jeremy VanAssche earned 81st in the preliminary round of the 100 meters with a time of 10.85 and sophomore Keshun McGee took 11th in his section of the triple jump with a mark of 43-3 3/4.

At the Al Manuel, the men finished with four titles on the day.

Freshman Joe Gauthier earned first in the 100 with a time of 10.74. Senior Logan Stahl took a title in the 800 by finishing in 1:53.67. Senior Trenton Osborn finished first in the long jump with a mark of 23-5 1/4 and the 4x100 relay team was first with a time of 42.07.

More comments from men's head coach Stan Kerr . . .
On individuals: "Logan, Trenton, Joe, Trevor and Trey all excelled today. Their contributions from the different area events showed a team balance, which is one of our main goals."

On the efforts overall: "Today's efforts were a great early sign of where our team is headed this outdoor season."

More comments from Marcia Mecklenburg . . .
On individuals: "We started the meet Friday with a first to fourth place sweep of the women's hammer. Sam Lester is having a great start with the hammer in the early season meets. The vaulters had a tough go of it with an ugly crosswind, but managed to place first and second. Samantha Boudreau had her best meet of the outdoor season, winning the shot put and putting over 43 feet. It took a lot of heart for everyone that ran a race from the 400 up because at some point they hit the frigid wind. I love those kinds of gutsy performances."

On the other meets: "I can hardly wait to see what our athletes can do in warmer weather. And speaking of warmer weather, Alexis Rolan and Rebecca Tarbert both had great races in the 100 at the Texas Relays. Kari Hamilton had the best performance from the Stanford Invitational group. She also had a big personal record for her and had a great experience running with athletes at that high of a level.
