MISSOULA, Mont. — The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team tabbed the win over Montana today (Apr. 15), 5-2. The Eagles sit at a 8-11 mark overall and 5-4 in conference.
"Fantastic team win today," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "I was proud of the way we turned up our grit after the disappointing loss from Friday. The desire to be the best we could be and fight through matches start to finish was definitely there. That's what we need in every match moving forward."
Janaya Smith competed on the first court in singles to defeat her opponent in two sets (6-2, 6-2), followed by Zoey Nelson who won 6-2, 6-4. Rylee Braeden took her match to three sets and found success winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 as well as Stephanie Broussard who competed at No. 4 and won 6-4, 6-2. Faye Worrall dropped her match 4-6, 4-6 before Rachel Swindell won 5-7, 6-3, 10-6.
Smith and Braeden teamed up on the first court in doubles play but lost 6-7 (6-8) before Nelson and Worrall worked together to pick up the win at No. 2 (6-2). Broussard and Swindell dropped their match 1-6 to give the Grizzlies the doubles point.
"We played some tough doubles matches and ended up losing the doubles point," said Hinson. "That really acted as a motivator for singles because everyone came out firing on all cylinders. The key was that we maintained that effort all the way through. I was really happy to see the team get rewarded with a win today."
The squad looks forward to hosting their last matches of the season next weekend against Weber State (Apr. 21) and Southern Utah (Apr. 22) as they fight for a spot at the Big Sky Conference Championships on Apr. 27-29.
